Should we build a permanent Moon base?

NASA plans to build a permanent base on the moon.

The reasoning is:
- Prepare for future exploration, with Mars the next stop
- Expansion of human civilization.

The year 2020 is when we'll start sending astronauts and have permanent staff starting in 2024.

Is it worth the $500-800 billion price tag? (current estimates)

No. First we need to eliminate our dependance on foreign oil. After we fix that huge problem, which funds nations who are trying to undermine us (take a look at the victory speech that Chavez gave in Veneszualia after winning another 6 year term the other day and you will see why we need to solve some problems before we go off into space) then we can go to the moon.

Yes. If I can pick who goes and then cancel the return flight.

But, there are always going to be problems here… You could (and I would) argue that we still have not fully explored (and extorted) our planet. The seas and the forests still have a lot to teach us. Cures for all of our ailments are waiting to be found (and exploited). If we could all settle down and start working on this stuff as one united people of earth… On second thought, let’s go to the moon. ;)

Stephen Hawking wrote something to the effect that our species is doomed if we do not establish some outerspace settlements. The time to start is now. The ???billions would all be spent here. It does not go into space with the equiptment. The space program has been good for our economy overall.
Let do it. I see the moon as a steping stone to much further away places. And by establishing a province on the moon we might just help solve the dependancy on oil problem.

Let's set real expectations.

Is there a military advantage to getting there first?

Can we mine the crap out of it and dump all our toxic garbage there?

YES............. No question about it.

If the United States doesn’t do it, who will? Who might? Can we afford not to do it?

I suppose a Moon base is the next logical step for future space exploration.

I was an adult when JFK declared we were going to send the first man to the Moon. I remember those who said it could never be done, it would be too expensive, we had too many more urgent problems here on Earth. We were constantly threatened by the Cold War.

I remember how many Americans felt frightened and insecure when the USSR beat us into space with the launching of Sputnik. I remember the public criticism of the money NASA was spending at the same time LBJ declared the War on Poverty. There were those who felt getting our troops out of Vietnam was more important than going to the Moon. Our cities were being burned by race riots, and we were going to the Moon!

Well, America did land a man on the Moon. We are a richer country today than ever before. Our leadership in space ended the Cold War (Reagan’s threat of Star Wars).

Our research in space exploration paid many dividends. It led to many profitable new technologies and treatments for disease.

Future space travel research may just be what we need to develop alternative energy for use on Earth.

Is it worth the $500-800 billion price tag? I can't even comprehend that much money. Just put it on the tab.................... If we move onto the Moon, who is going to evict us?

I'm not positive but I don't think Stephen Hawking's colleagues even consider him one of the top 10 in his field anymore, maybe not even top 20? I know he's right on this because they all say the sun can't last forever.
