We did too...outside behind the football equipment shed. I could swear the indoor smoking ban thingy was in full swing by then. I'm not certain though, since I was burning through brain cells at an impressive rate back then.
 
(I've been going bald since I was a teenager, so sorry, never could do the mullet thing - no matter how much I wanted to...)

I remember the mall-smoking thing - many of the stores didn't allow smoking, but there was always smoking in the mall itself, ashtrays by every bench, on every table in the food court and at every door.
