Betting on baseball AFTER his player days were over and was a manager had no effect on his fabulous playing career. Players don't enter the HOF based on character, but rather performance. Otherwise Ty Cobb wouldn't have gotten in, that's for sure. I personally think that Rose is a jerk, but you can't argue his talent on the field. I also think he should have admitted to his gambling immediately when confronted with the issue.
Everyone breaks the rules at one time or another -- the punishment should fit the crime. If you drive 1 mph over the speed limit, should your license be taken away forever? No, that would be ridiculous.
Now, you want to talk about CHEATERS -- how about Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire, et.al. pumping themselves up on steroids, and other performance enhancing drugs. If you believe these guys are incident because they don't have proof -- then you should sit down with YOUR kids and tell them, as long as you don't get caught, it's not cheating.
GB, I had the same opinion as you until I read the rules of baseball. Interestingly enough, there are not that many rules that can ban you from the game, and like yourself, I looked towards D. Strawberry, the roids users, and some other "jerks" for reasons why he should of gotten in. However, those people funny enough, did not break the rules that would prohibit you from getting into the HOF.
If you drive one mile over the speed limit, you may get a ticket, but your licence will not be taken away from you. Now, drive 120 MPH and see what can happen depending on what state you live in. Thats the law.
What happens if you kill someone in cold blood just because your pissed off? Do you get a freebie? Is the law perfect? Heck no, however we are not talking about the law but "rules" . Rose got paid to do what he did, and even at that time, pretty good money.
Rose KNEW the rules and broke them on a regular basis. After his book and changing his story so many times (AKA lying), the man is really starting to look pathetic.
GB, is there any baseball player who broke the rules of baseball (that can ban you for life from the game) and made it into the hall of fame that you can think of or find? If you can answer that question with ONE name, I may think you have a leg to stand on (as far as giving someone a second chance). Also if that were the case, I'm surprised Rose isn't screaming that mans name (who got in after breaking the rules).
Perhaps they should do what it seems like we always do as a society and rewrite the rules?
