Russia has roughly 1 Million Dead & Injured. Ukraine lost 20% of its population as refugees and another 10% are dead or injured, and Russia controls about 15% of Ukraine territory in the Eastern provinces and the Crimea.
Russia took the Crimea under Obama. They took Donbas and other eastern regions under Biden and continue to push Ukraine to their breaking point despite military aid from the EU and the US. The US is basically emotionally 'done' with supporting Ukraine. Ukraine is not our ally. But we believe Russia is at the wrong for invading. So while Russia is wrong, we, as a nation, don't really seem to give a shit about Ukraine either. Generally we believe it to be a corrupt nation and we generally believe there is no way for a small nation to 'beat' a large nation. Literally 40 Million versus 150 Million people, the odds of Ukraine winning are ZERO without our firepower, without out support, without our tax dollars. And while morally it is just for us to support Ukraine, we also know that Ukraine is corrupt politically; Ukraine has shut down churches, closed media outlets critical of the leadership, so it is not actually a free democracy; Ukraine is not technically our ally, Ukraine will never be a NATO or even an EU member (at least in the near future), so it is essentially a nation without allies.
All that said, and there is a lot more to say, maybe we are on a pathway to peace?
But we can understand that Zelensky must take a public position to oppose concessions to the aggressor nation of Russia. That said, it appears the mood has changed. The Finnish representative suggested there is major progress. The Italian PM suggests that there has been a sea-change in the negotions. The NATO chief seems to indicate that we are at a turning point.
So maybe we are closer to peace? I underwent that Ukraine may not be able to accept giving up land. I also understand that for NATO, the EU and the United Nations to accept giving Russia land is an invitation for big nations to beat up small nations. But something is clearly happening.
