ON Star is advertising here on lour TV that if your car is stolen or if it is being chased by the police the car can be shut down and brought to a slow stop.

Rumor I heard a long time ago is that with ON Star they could (not saying they do) listen to your conversations in the car without you knowing about it. Like I said rumor only be it does make sense.
 
Has anyone out there used on-star? I am unfamiliar with the service (I have seen the commercials). What is the monthly fee? Is it only for use in emergency? Cell phone would be almost as useful, assuming your extremities work and your phone is charged (as opposed to my wife's phone).:whistling:

I have it in my suburban but don't use it. It still kicks on if I push the wrong button at night. If I answer the voice with WTF it comes back and says it did not understand my instructions. LOL It is too much Big Brother for me. If I could buy a bare bones vehicle without any systems I would. The insurance companies and LEO's all access your data in the onboard systems. The dealers collect it as well. The time is close when insurance rates will be determined by your driving habits as tracked by the computers.
 
We have it on our Suburban. So far we are still on the free part of it from where we bought it, but that will expire in December. It believe it is $199 a year for emergency & $299 for the part with directions. If you have Verizon you can just add your vehicle on to your plan as you would any other phone. We don't have Verizon, but may switch once our contract is up with AT&T (16 months to go) and now that Verizon is in the area. We did buy a few minutes through OnStar (100 minutes for $13) that we haven't used all of yet. It has much better coverage than your handheld phone. I've used it for directions a few times. It is nice being able to call them if you know the name of a business and don't know the address they can find it for you where on the GPS you need the address. Not sure how it would work if we had the full navigation system, but ours just talks to you and displays the info in the DIC.
 
That's pretty wild. I'm really not seeing that Caddy as one that a little blue haired old lady will drive or even one with a little old man slumped down in his seat peering out from beneath the steering wheel but over the dash would be driving either.
