The best thing that the US can do for Puerto Rico is to allow it to become its own Nation. Of course they don't want that, because right now, they have the best of all worlds.... They don't pay US Income tax, but they do get all the US aid and assistance that they could possibly need.

Kinda like Israel.

Although the cut and paste did not pick up the graphics, here is the results of my local newspaper's published results today online. It sort of mirrors our poll, huh?

Do you think a Spanish-version of the National Anthem should be available?

Yes - and their goverment is still bankrupt. There has been a number of stories about how the Puerto Rican goverment is bankrupt - has a debt of something like a billion dollars, and cant seem to agree on a plan to get it all together. Apparently they can't even get loans now and the latest story this morning said that the goverment had shut down. I have also heard the story that JimR mentioned - the version I heard said that there were scribblings in the airport bathrooms telling Puerto Ricans to go to Lawrence MA - it has the best welfare. Coincidentally Lawrence happened to be one of the cities where people went out on strike yesterday - although to my knowledge the bulk of the population there is Puerto Rican - not Mexican, so I don't quite know what they are protesting about.

At this point the US should allow - or even force if possible - Puerto Rico to become it's own nation. I have heard rumblings of making Puerto Rico the 51st state - from what I know that would be a disaster. They are already bankrupt now - adding them as a state would further add to the federal debt and the entire island would in all likelihood turn into a huge welfare state.

I just got back from spending a few days down in Florida - I listened here and there to the talk radio shows and it sounds like people down there have the same attitude as people I know up here - they are pissed about the illegals and the whole National Anthem in Spanish thing.

Even with all the US aid Puerto Rico is still bankrupt - Israel on the other hand has a pretty damn good standard of living. So the reasons for cutting off aid are different in each case, Puerto Rico because it is blackhole of spending with no payback - Israel because they do not need our money and because the amounts we send them are ridiculous in comparison to the benefit the US receives from the relationship.
