There are a growing number of ranchers now accusing the meat packers of playing politics by shutting down plants, not because of the Wuhan flu ,but to force the farmers to drop the price on livestock and create shortages at the grocer in order to increase profits on both ends.

A Fifth Of Wendy's Restaurants Said To Be Out Of Beef As Shortage Spreads
Rolling meat shortages are now underway in the US. We warned several weeks ago that this would begin in the first half of May as a crisis unfolds at the nation's meat processing plants due to coronavirus outbreaks.
At the moment, the food supply chain is cracking. At least a dozen processing plants have shuttered operations and output reduced at others, resulting in surging wholesale beef prices and shortages at supermarkets.

Boxed beef on the other hand is record high price....
Packers are making record profits once again, at the consumer and producers expence. Anyone see a problem with this picture?
Beef producers are fighting mad, and rightfully so. Iowa and several other attorneys generals in mid west states are asking for an investigation on the meat packers. Those guys have been crooks for so long they have no idea the difference between right and wrong. I hope they jail some of the basturds.

Kirk, I have no idea what beef prices are these days since we got out of the cattle business but meat packers squeezing both ends is nothing new and I agree with you, they should get jailed.
Bamby is right, once you send your cows to auction, you have no control over the price. For the longest time we dealt with a private buyer who paid a fair price.
We were lucky. When we dealt with the packing plant directly it was a local, family owned concern who'd been in business for 60 years. Dan, the owner, passed away a few years back but it is still nominally owned by his wife although the kids and grandkids run the place. When you buy meat retail from them you are going to pay a dollar or two more than at the grocery store but the difference in quality is more than worth it.
