Hot Air Ballon Ride anyone???

If it is true they shot down a hobby group's $12 balloon with a $400k sidewinder you can bet your ass it'll get swept under the rug.

As I understand it, they now cost $472,000 a pop and the first one missed. So, that $12.00 balloon now costs $944,000.00.

With the lower flying ones I don't see why a short burst of the gat wouldn't be cheaper. One second is about 60 rounds.

The same idea occurred to me so, I did a bunch of research.

Seemingly, shooting helium filled balloons, especially at altitude, doesn't work all that well. There was a long explanation of why it didn't work which I didn't fully understand. I think that it's akin to bullet proof, self healing fuel tanks on aircraft.

The Canadians tried to shoot one down, they think that they hit it about 20 times and it just kept going ... all the way across the Atlantic. The British and then the French tried to shoot it down and again they failed. I think that it finally "bled out" and came down in the Alps.
