Well this is a little concerning. And today I've seen 2 or 3 different reports on this problem so while I believe NEWSMAX has a solid right bias, I'm citing them because others are saying pretty much the same thing and if both right and left report the story then clearly there is a lot more to be concerned about than meets the eye.

From what I can tell, COMMERCIAL grade power inverters, in addition to CONSUMER grade power inverters, have hidden bonus surprises built into them. Apparently the communist Chinese party can remotely access them and use them to create a blackout. Either and isolated or an area wide blackout.

The link above has the full story, below is about 1/2 of the story:

Rogue Communication Devices Found in Chinese Solar Power Inverters

U.S. energy officials are reassessing the risk posed by Chinese-made devices that play a critical role in renewable energy infrastructure after unexplained communication equipment was found inside some of them, two people familiar with the matter said.
Power inverters, which are predominantly produced in China, are used throughout the world to connect solar panels and wind turbines to electricity grids. They are also found in batteries, heat pumps, and electric vehicle chargers.
While inverters are built to allow remote access for updates and maintenance, the utility companies that use them typically install firewalls to prevent direct communication back to China.
However, rogue communication devices not listed in product documents have been found in some Chinese solar power inverters by U.S experts who strip down equipment hooked up to grids to check for security issues, the two people said.
Over the past nine months, undocumented communication devices, including cellular radios, have also been found in some batteries from multiple Chinese suppliers, one of them said.
Reuters was unable to determine how many solar power inverters and batteries they have looked at.
The rogue components provide additional, undocumented communication channels that could allow firewalls to be circumvented remotely, with potentially catastrophic consequences, the two people said.
Both declined to be named because they did not have permission to speak to the media.
"We know that China believes there is value in placing at least some elements of our core infrastructure at risk of destruction or disruption," said Mike Rogers, a former director of the U.S. National Security Agency. "I think that the Chinese are, in part, hoping that the widespread use of inverters limits the options that the West has to deal with the security issue."
A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Washington said: "We oppose the generalization of the concept of national security, distorting and smearing China's infrastructure achievements."
Using the rogue communication devices to skirt firewalls and switch off inverters remotely, or change their settings, could destabilize power grids, damage energy infrastructure, and trigger widespread blackouts, experts said.
"That effectively means there is a built-in way to physically destroy the grid," one of the people said. The two people declined to name the Chinese manufacturers of the inverters and batteries with extra communication devices, nor say how many they had found in total.
The existence of the rogue devices has not previously been reported. The U.S. government has not publicly acknowledged the discoveries. . . .
"While this functionality may not have malicious intent, it is critical for those procuring to have a full understanding of the capabilities of the products received," a spokesperson said.
Work is ongoing to address any gaps in disclosures through "Software Bill of Materials" - or inventories of all the components that make up a software application - and other contractual requirements, the spokesperson said.
As U.S.-China tensions escalate, the U.S. and others are reassessing China's role in strategic infrastructure because of concerns about potential security vulnerabilities, two former government officials said.
"The threat we face from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is real and growing. Whether it's telecom hacks or remotely accessing solar and battery inverters, the CCP stops at nothing to target our sensitive infrastructure and components," said U.S. Rep. August Pfluger, a Republican member of the Committee on Homeland Security.
"It is about time we ramp up our efforts to show China that compromising us will no longer be acceptable," he told Reuters. . . .

This whole renewable energy shit has to go. Nuclear and wire possibly coal. And natural gas. That's what we need. That's what is reliable.
And the Chinese are also reliable. We can count on them to be honest right?
I would trust nothing from China,
That includes owning a Kia.

That includes owning a Kia.

Kia is owned and made by Hyundai, which is South Korean. They are actual allies of ours.

BYD is the big Chinese car company, not sure we can get them in the USA yet?

This whole renewable energy shit has to go. Nuclear and wire possibly coal. And natural gas. That's what we need. That's what is reliable.

The good news is that the liberal lefties in Silicon Valley computer companies NEED a lot of electricity and KNOW that they NEED reliable electricity and UNDERSTAND that it pretty much defaults to NUCLEAR. They are funding much of the development of Modular Nuclear Reactors, which will revolutionize the entire power grid.

And another take on this . . .

"Rogue" Devices Found Hidden In Chinese Solar Panels Could "Destroy The Grid"

Undisclosed communication devices reportedly discovered in Chinese-manufactured solar panels and related equipment have sparked concerns among U.S. officials about the vulnerability of the nation’s power grid, according to a Reuters report.
These “rogue” devices, found over the past nine months, could potentially destabilize energy infrastructure and trigger widespread blackouts, sources familiar with the matter told the outlet.
The undocumented devices, including cellular radios, were identified in solar power inverters, batteries, electric vehicle chargers, and heat pumps produced by several Chinese suppliers.
U.S. experts uncovered the components during security inspections of renewable energy equipment, prompting a reevaluation of the risks posed by these products.
Inverters, critical for connecting solar panels and wind turbines to the power grid, are predominantly manufactured in China, amplifying concerns about their security.
“We know that China believes there is value in placing at least some elements of our core infrastructure at risk of destruction or disruption,” said Mike Rogers, former director of the U.S. National Security Agency.

“I think that the Chinese are, in part, hoping that the widespread use of inverters limits the options that the West has to deal with the security issue,” Roger’s further urged.
Experts warn that these rogue devices could bypass firewalls, allowing remote manipulation of inverter settings or even complete shutdowns.
Such actions could disrupt power grids, damage energy infrastructure, and cause blackouts.
“That effectively means there is a built-in way to physically destroy the grid,” another source told Reuters.
The discovery adds to long-standing warnings from energy and security experts about the risks of relying on Chinese-made green energy products.

Excuse me but the Kia is made in South Korea mostly from Chinese parts. As are many cars produced in the Orient, Japan, Europe, Mexico, Canada, and the USA. I chose Kia because of S Korea's proximity to China.

That said, putting such devices in equipment destined for critical infrastructure in the USA is a more logical approach that automobiles. But one approach to creating ciaos is not omitted by the other.

As always they are just copying the USA playbook. Didn't we do this way back in the 80's with printers sold to Iraq. This crap has been going on for ages.

It's no worse than almost all the container cranes are made in china have similar implants

“How can it be a spy satellite if they announce on television that it’s a spy satellite?”
–George Carlin

If you’re ever at a major U.S. port, take a look at the cranes looming over the container ships and see if you can spot any Made in China stickers on them. Did you know that about 80% of the cranes that lift containers off ships and put them on the docks in the U.S. are made by China? Now imagine China using those cranes for espionage and cyber attacks. I’m not describing the plot of some James Bond-type spy movie. The government is warning us right now that that’s a real possibility.

New Regulation Around Threat from Chinese-Made Cranes

container-ship-at-port.jpg

U.S. ports are getting a new set of regulations to follow in case their cranes really are spy devices, as John Gallagher reports in a FreightWaves article:

Owners and operators of over 200 Chinese-made container cranes at U.S. ports will be subject to new cyber-risk management requirements aimed at reducing China’s ability to spy on America’s domestic supply chains.
The Coast Guard, on behalf of the Department of Homeland Security, announced yesterday that owners and operators of the Chinese-made cranes “should immediately contact their local Coast Guard Captain of the Port (COTP)” to obtain copies of Maritime Security Directive 105-4. The directive gives the new “cyber risk management actions” to follow.

I won’t be able to share the directive and new rules that will have to be followed at the ports because “The directive contains security-sensitive information and, therefore, cannot be made available to the general public.” But I will share the full text of the Coast Guard announcement at the end of this post.

How Are Cranes a Threat?

The Coast Guard announcement contains some explanation of how and why the Chinese-manufactured ship to shore (SPS) cranes are a threat:

By design, these cranes may be controlled, serviced, and programmed from remote locations, and those features potentially leave PRC-manufactured STS cranes vulnerable to exploitation, threatening the maritime elements of the national transportation system.

As such, additional measures are necessary to prevent a Transportation Security Incident in the national transportation system due to the prevalence of PRC-manufactured STS cranes in the U.S., threat intelligence related to the PRC’s interest in disrupting U.S. critical infrastructure, and the built-in vulnerabilities for remote access and control of these STS cranes.

Hunt for Threats on Cranes

The Coast Guard says an examination of the cranes for security threats is well underway, as Gallagher reports in his FreightWaves article:

At a White House briefing on Tuesday, Coast Guard Rear Adm. John Vann, who heads the agency’s cybercommand, said that his teams have “assessed cybersecurity or hunted for threats” on 92 of the cranes so far.

“Those assessments determine the cybersecurity posture, and the hunt missions actually look for malicious cyberactivity on the cranes,” Vann said. “We’ve almost canvassed about 50% of the existing cranes,” he added, but did not state whether security concerns were discovered on those cranes.

Like I said, we have more to worry about that our Solar arrays and wind farm's vulnerability to Chinese Cyber attacks.

England's Daily Mail is reporting that these are "kill switches" that would allow China to shut off the power.

Revealed: China has secretly installed kill switches in solar panels sold to the West - which could see Beijing plunge its enemies into darkness in the event of WW3

Engineers have discovered 'kill switches' embedded in Chinese-manufactured parts on American solar farms, raising fears Beijing could manipulate supplies or 'physically destroy' grids across the US, UK and Europe.
Energy officials are assessing the risks posed by small communication devices in power inverters - an integral component of renewable energy systems that connects them to the power grid.
While inverters are built to allow remote access for updates and maintenance, the utility companies using them typically install firewalls to prevent direct communication back to China.
But rogue communication devices not listed in product documents have been found in some solar power inverters by US experts who strip equipment hooked to grids to check for security issues, two sources told Reuters.
Using these devices to skirt firewalls and switch off inverters remotely, or change their settings, could destabilise power grids, damage energy infrastructure and trigger widespread blackouts.
'That effectively means there is a built-in way to physically destroy the grid,' one of the sources declared.
The discovery has raised fears Beijing may maintain the capability to wreak havoc on power grids across the Western world such is the reliance of renewable energy systems on Chinese-manufactured parts. . . .
