HDTV or EDTV or regular DTV . . . that is the question!

The lovely Mrs_B has been on a remodeling binge this summer spurred on by the new garage and workshop that popped up in the back yard.

I've told her she is welcome to do work in the new garage/workshop :tiphat:
For some reason she seldom ventures out there and has yet to do any work out there. Perhaps she doesn't know the door code on the digital lock?

Anyway we are wrapping up a list of projects and the family room is getting some furniture to match the rug she bought to coordinate with the new fireplace mantle and entertainment center??? And that leaves us with an old analog 25" TV that is in a fairly large room (16' x 25'). Analog is due to be phased out of use over the next year or two so we might as well get a bigger screen TV and put it down there. Right?

So we have a room we occasionally use, but we are fixing it up and may end up using it far more often? We could put up to a 54" diagonal TV into the new entertainment center that we had built.
  • Do I pop for a HDTV and get that amazing picture in hopes that we will use the room more frequently?
  • Do I go for an EDTV (enhanced definition) which is less expensive and gives an improved picture over regular DTV betting we will still only occasionally use the room?
  • Do I cheap out and get a DTV knowing that I have HD in the living room?
Do any of you have more than one HDTV and if so do they both get watched or is it a waste of money?

I'll be interested in the responses to this one.
How much HDTV does the family watch now Bob?

I don't have HDTV, but have considered it. For now, I don't know what I'm missing.

My daughter and I both watch the HDTV. Our family only watches a modest amount of TV overall. There are 2 easy answers here, one is go full bore and get the HD and then it may draw us to spend more time in the family room. The other is go cheap on the assumption that the room is likely to be used infrequently. But I don't know if either is reasonable.

I like technology. I am attracted to the picture quality in the living room, in fact we've had that TV for 11 months and it still amazes me at how sharp the picture is when watching a HD broadcast. It is hard to describe but it is almost mesmerizing. My brother saw mine and then went out and bought a HD set because he was amazed by it. It really is that much better than a traditional broadcast. But it comes at a pretty steep price. Regular digital sets are 1/4-th the price of better HD sets.

I watch TV for the content, whether it is informative, educational, or just outright entertainment. I started watching when TV was B&W. It was nice when color came out, but the content was the same. The largest screen we have ever owned is a 25" console; I regulary watch on a 10" screen. The content is the same. When we get our new Sprinter RV, it will have a 17" LCD HDTV flat panel TV (standard equipment, no choice), but I will be feeding it with a conventional satellite receiver, not HDTV. The content is the same...I have watched many programs with snowy, blurred reception, ghost images and lines across the screen, sometimes with the vertical hold flipping up over and over. It's all OK as long as I get the content I want. I'm fairly willing to spend money for content, but I'm much less willing to pay for prettier pictures.
