Getting charged extra to use CA$H to pay your bill?

I know of a local restaurant that doesn't accept cash.

I pulled up, placed and order, pulled to the window and handed out a $20 bill but they wouldn't take cash. I have credit and debit cards FOR MY CONVENIENCE, but I told them if they don't take my cash then I don't want their food.

But if someone wants to charge me EXTRA for using legal currency, uh, no, that is wrong.

This story is pretty unbelievable, but probably a sign of the times. I'm just not going to play along with that game.

I hate that everything I buy cost 3% more because of credit card company charges to retailers.

Many places here in MO discount 3% for cash. So I often pay in cash. Your experience sounds a bit loony.

There are several stores here that also offer 3% discounts for cash.

The story I posted happened in New York. At Yankee Stadium.

My story happened with a modest size regional restaurant chain that is Chicago based, they apparently don't take cash at their locations.

Not taking cash likely reduces their chances of being robbed.

It also reduces their chance of gaining my patronage.

I remember a time when we were shopping at Sears (in the 1980’s). We handed the cashier cash. She literally said she did not know how to ring up cash and had to get a manager.

Also reduces chances of employee theft from the register. Also reduces labor costs counting in/out the register's cash drawer each day. Also pretty much eliminates the need for an armored car service to pick up deposits, or an employee to go to the bank daily. Lots of reasons for a business to go cashless.

And I agree, no patronage from me either.

Odd, I had the same experience at Sears back in 1972.

My wife and I laugh about it to this day.
