Fewer teens having sex . . .

According to news stories, polls of teenagers and studies from several health and census agencies seem to show that fewer teen agers are having sex. Seems also that teen births are at an all time low and that the rate of high school graduation has also increased. Also the rate of parents who read to their young children has increased.

SOUNDS LIKE A LOT OF GOOD NEWS to me, but it also seems odd. There is so much porn available and so many advertisements on TV and in magazines that are blatantly sexual that I would have thought that the rate of teen sex would have increased.

I have not seen the raw data, and I'm curious if there are racial, ethnic, regional or economic disparities in the data. Basically I wonder if inner city data, rural America data and suburban data are all following the overall trends or if there is some group that is going against the trend but overall the trends are favorable???

Being that you are the one wondering about all this I think that you shoud do a research project on this. You can let the rest of us know what you find out.:yum: :yum:

That's the problem, normally I can find the data behind the story but I've not found the data yet.

Here is the story, and to me it is encouraging news that society is not totally hopeless (or helpless).

Report: Teen birth rate hits record low

By JENNIFER C. KERR, Associated Press WriterFri Jul 13, 7:17 AM ET

Fewer high school students are having sex these days, and more are using condoms. The teen birth rate has hit a record low.

More young people are finishing high school, too, and more little kids are being read to, according to the latest government snapshot on the well-being of the nation's children. It's good news on a number of key wellness indicators, experts said of the report being released Friday.

"The implications for the population are quite positive in terms of their health and their well-being," said Edward Sondik, director of the National Center for Health Statistics. "The lower figure on teens having sex means the risk of sexually transmitted diseases is lower."

In 2005, 47 percent of high school students — 6.7 million — reported having had sexual intercourse, down from 54 percent in 1991. The rate of those who reported having had sex has remained the same since 2003.

Of those who had sex during a three-month period in 2005, 63 percent — about 9 million — used condoms. That's up from 46 percent in 1991.

The teen birth rate, the report said, was 21 per 1,000 young women ages 15-17 in 2005 — an all-time low. It was down from 39 births per 1,000 teens in 1991.

"This is very good news," said Sondik. "Young teen mothers and their babies are at a greater risk of both immediate and long-term difficulties."

The birth rate in the 15-19 age group was 40 per 1,000 in 2005, also down sharply from the previous decade.

Education campaigns that started years ago are having a significant effect, said James Wagoner, president of Advocates for Youth, a Washington-based nonprofit group that focuses on prevention of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

"I think the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the efforts in the '80s and '90s had a lot to do with that," Wagoner said of the improved numbers on teen sex, condoms and adolescent births.

"We need to encourage young teens to delay sexual initiation and we need to make sure they get all the information they need about condoms and birth control," he said.

The report was compiled from statistics and studies at 22 federal agencies, and covered 38 key indicators, including infant mortality, academic achievement rates and the number of children living in poverty.

Other highlights:
  • _The percentage of children covered by health insurance decreased slightly. In 2005, 89 percent of children had health insurance coverage at some point during the year, down from 90 percent the previous year.
  • _The percentage of low birthweight infants (born weighing less than 5 pounds, 8 ounces) increased. It was 8.2 percent in 2005, up from 8.1 percent in 2004.
  • _More youngsters are getting reading time. Sixty percent of children ages 3-5 (and not in kindergarten) were read to daily by a family member in 2005, up from 53 percent in 1993.
  • _The percentage of children who had at least one parent working year round and full-time increased to 78.3 percent in 2005, up from 77.6 percent the previous year.
  • _More young people are completing high school. In 2005, 88 percent of young adults had finished high school — up from 84 percent in 1980.
The report was released by the Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics — a consortium of federal agencies that includes the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the Census Bureau and the Administration for Children and Families.

"Fewer teens having sex"

I doubt it. I believe they changed the definition of sex. Now, it probably only counts intercourse. Prior polls probably included a wider variety.

A government snapshot that is issued by the present administration that has a track record of manipulating the facts to prove the points that they want us to believe in....

Without knowing more about this organization, I would be skeptical about anything that they say, especially knowing how government works pulling the strings of organizations that you think are independent of influence.....

I wonder how many of these government agencies have hand picked administrators that parrot the presidents opinions????

Not much credibility in my opinion based on the paragraph above.....

I believe Teen sex is up. They are just using better birth control devices. This keeps teen pregnancies down. Not sure how they would track it but I here from my Teens first hand and its scary how many kids are having sex.

JUNKMAN,
Man cheer up! I new you were a pesimist but man thats down right depressing!

I also find it hard to believe and I still believe a definition of government statistics that I heard a long time ago "lying with numbers" . In other words if you use the numbers in the right way you can make anything seem possible. Ditto on the better birth control and kids are using condoms more because unlike when I was a teenager now you can catch someting while having sex that can kill you, and I don't care how good the sex is if you die from it ain't that good. When I was that age it was oh no I got herpies, now its oh its only herpies thank god its not aids. rugerman

Well honestly if you would have asked me I would have thought that teen sex was WAY UP but it seems there is more evidence to show that modesty may be starting to settle in with a small % of the teens and it seems that may even be growing?

Here is a small portion of an article I just ran across: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19762075/site/newsweek/
Girls Going Mild(er)

A new 'modesty movement' aims to teach young women they don't have to be bad, or semiclad.

Demure Dresses: Flappers, the wild girls of their time

By Jennie Yabroff
Newsweek

July 23, 2007 issue - Consider the following style tips for girls: skirts and dresses should fall no more than four fingers above the knee. No tank tops without a sweater or jacket over them.

Choose a bra that has a little padding to help disguise when you are cold. These fashion hints may sound like the prim mandates of a 1950s "health" film. But they are from the Web site of Pure Fashion, a modeling and etiquette program for teen girls whose goal is "to show the public it is possible to be cute, stylish and modest." Pure Fashion has put on 13 shows in 2007 featuring 600 models. National director Brenda Sharman estimates there will be 25 shows in 2008.

It is not the only newfangled outlet for old-school ideas about how girls should dress: ModestApparelUSA.com, ModestByDesign.com and DressModestly.com all advocate a return to styles that leave almost everything to the imagination. They cater to what writer Wendy Shalit claims is a growing movement of "girls gone mild"—teens and young women who are rejecting promiscuous "bad girl" roles embodied by Britney Spears, Bratz Dolls and the nameless, shirtless thousands in "Girls Gone Wild" videos.

Instead, these girls cover up, insist on enforced curfews on college campuses, bring their moms on their dates and pledge to stay virgins until married.

Junk, interesting poll. 57% claim to have had sex at an age UNDER 19 years old. That poll is taken from ALL AGE GROUPS and not just the current crop of teens. The information in the article cited in the first post shows a lower number and shows that the % has dropped over the past few years. Based on the MSNBC poll, and based on the articles above, it would not surprise me if the teen sex rate is actually dropping.
