Cover My Tractor With Tarp?

BoneheadNW

O.K., I don't treat my tractor as good as many others treat theirs. I leave mine outside in the rain and cold. Hey, there is no room in the garage so give me a break! :argueing: I know that if I was to cover it with a tarp, the condensation would probably be worse for it than not covering it at all. But what I was thinking was to park it close to the house on the other side of my garage (to get it partly under the roof overhang) and extending a tarp over the tractor with anchors on the ground. Thus it would be protected directly overhead but will be open to the air toward the front and back. Good idea or bonehead idea?

Hey Bone, Tarping like you say shouldn't be a problem. Air will circatate, and keep the moisture out. Mines still sitting outside too. :drink: Way too much wind, rain, cold, tornadoes, and snow showers to get out and make a hole in the barn right now. Hopefully this weekend I can get to it. I'm not kidding about the weather, we've really had all that the last couple days.

We've done just what your thinking of BH with boats, and it works fine. Much better than just leaving it out in the open.

We're getting that same weather John. We had tornado warnings in Meigs county last night (my home). That is unusual in itself. Very high strong winds. At least no tornado touched down. Now we're getting the cold stuff. Going down to the low 20's tomorrow night, with a chance of snow!

We had a tornado sighted in Dundee 20 miles away last night. This morning on my way to work, I saw some snow accumulation, not much, bit it was snow. Down to 25 tonight and very windy. Must be that global warming, eh?:rofl1:

Ahh... What a trip that was for my niece and nephew in-law. They were headed back to Kentucky and were in Dundee. They called and said that sirens were going off all over the place. They pulled into a gas station to wait it out. The station locked its doors. My niece was freaking out. She hates that kind of weather. Well, I do too.:drink: I wish I could say the rest of the trip was uneventful. A couple miles from home, my niece was driving. She was getting off an off ramp. She was going a bit too fast an smacked into a sign with her new (only a few months old) Kia Reo. Needless to say, it is pretty well beat up.

I bought a car cover for my tractor last year (first year with it). It worked OK except for all the sharp edges on the tractor. Since we get a lot of wind the car cover eventually just got a lot of holes in it. It was also a hassle to take off in the crappy weather.

You can probably tarp it up but you need to pay attention to the sharp points.

Last week, I just took the tractor into the garage (wife was away) and attacked it with paint and grease. I coated the bucket with several coats of Rustoleum and touched up any scratches on the loader and body. I bought some Loctite Rust Preventer and sprayed that over the under carriage. Waxed up some of the top parts and just tried to make sure anything that could rust had something coating it. Cleaned and re-greased the loader, etc. I even but undercoating in the wheel wells (Did I mention my wife was away and that meant I had some serious free time).

Yesterday I blew through 4 more cans of spray paint and touched up most of my implements. I need to power wash my rotary cutter though as it still has too much crud stuck to it to paint it.

I usually just blast the rusty spots with some Ospho first and then throw some more paint on every so often. If there is serious rust it might get some attention with a wire brush. Paint is cheap (I always buy it when it is on sale). I think I'm going to give up an trying to preserve the implement colors and just paint everything black from now on.

I should probably Armor-all the seat.

Now my tractor looks so nice and shiny I don't want to use it but I think it should survive the winter without being covered.

First of all, do you think that your wife might be interested in taking my wife (and kids) with her next time? :D :3_7_11v:

Secondly, I don't know about you but I'm not sure that armor-alling (that is a verb) your seat is a good idea. I made the mistake of armor-alling the seat on my motorcycle (back in my wild bachelor days) and nearly killed myself on the first serious corner I came to. :pat:

I do think that I will bring the tractor into the garage for an afternoon for some touch up one of these days.

I don't know about that. She took the two year old this time but left me with the one year old (thank god for nap time). I'm looking forward to the next trip when she takes them both!

I'm smarter than her - I've done one 2.5 hour flight with a screaming child on my lap. I've learned my lesson.

That flight wouldn't have happened to be to S. Cal would it? I've been there (in that situation) before. My kids are now 9 and 3 years old so traveling is a bit easier.

Why is it that kids don't like nap time as much as adults do? My wife swears that I could fall asleep anywhere. On slow days at work I have been known to fall asleep sitting in front of the computer only to be awakened my the alarm or intercom.

BH,

How about getting one of those 10x20' carports? A cheap one is about $100, a decent one is $200.

I was thinking about that but all the ones I have seen around here are butt ugly. Actually, we have an E350 Ford van that does not fit in our garage (too high, too wide, too long- other than that it fits great) that we would love to cover with a carport. Could anyone out there direct me to something more decent looking? :drive2:

What's your budget?

I built a couple out-buildings with corregated steel roof, 4x4 posts, Hardypanel sides... for about $4 sq/ft. Probably a bit higher now since lumber has gone up.

This is what I'm planning to do once I get through about 5 other projects. It is probably the cheapest best looking option. You can get those metal carports for $700-$1000 but I think they are a little ugly too. Although the ease of assembly is tempting.

Whoa! Hold it right there. If it involves any sort of construction activity (over and above putting together a kit) then I am S.O.L. Unless one of you wants to come over and help. I'll even make you my Macho Man Meatloaf! :toilet: :fart2: :puke2:
