Chicago CUBS

Just some interesting information about my favorite baseball team:

Twenty major events that have occurred since the Chicago Cubs last laid claim to a World Series championship:
1. Radio was invented; Cubs fans got to hear their team lose.
2. TV was invented; Cubs fans got to see their team lose.
3. Baseball added 14 teams; Cubs fans get to see and hear their team lose to more clubs.
4. George Burns celebrated his 10th, 20th, 30th, 40th, 50th, 60th, 70th, 80th, 90th and 100th birthdays.
5. Haley's comet passed Earth twice.
6. Harry Caray was born....and died. Incredible, but true. Junkman was born and got really really old.
7. The NBA, NHL and NFL were formed, and ALL Chicago teams won championships in each league.
8. Man landed on the moon, as have several home runs given up by Cubs pitchers.
9. Sixteen U.S. Presidents were elected.
10. There were 11 amendments added to the Constitution.
11. Prohibition was created and repealed.
12. The Titanic was built, set sail, sank, was discovered and became the subject of major motion pictures, the latest giving Cubs fans hope that something that finishes on the bottom can come out on top.
13. Wrigley Field was built and becomes the oldest park in the National League.
14. Flag poles were erected on Wrigley Field roof to hold all of the team's future World Series pennants. Those flag poles have since rusted and been taken down.
15. A combination of 40 Summer and Winter Olympics have been held.
16. Thirteen baseball players have won the Triple Crown; several thanked Cubs pitchers.
17. Bell-bottoms came in style, went out of style and came back in.
18. The Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox and the Florida Marlins have all won the World Series.
19. The Cubs played 14,153 regular-season games; they lost the majority of them.
20. Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Oklahoma and New Mexico were added to the Union.

I was always a SOX fan -- maybe it was Jack Brickhouse (Hey Hey) that turned me off of the CUBS as a kid.

Bob ... last fall I was in the windy city on business. I finally had the opportunity of a lifetime .. to see one of the wonders of the world ... Wrigley Field. ANYONE who loves baseball (or want's to know what it's all about) should see three parks, Yankee stadium, Fenway and Wrigley.

Anyway, to the point. I've have been in a number of old and new parks in my time, but never to wrigley until last summer. Now I know what all the hub-bub is about.

L O W - T E C H

At wrigley, you had better have come to watch baseball, because that's about all, thank the lord, you will see. NO JUMBOTRON, NO HIGH TECH Synthesized HipHop EuroHouse sense assaulting pollution, no NUTTIN EXCEPT BASEBALL (and a lil old fashioned organ music).

All the other stadiums are filled with distractions that make it impossible to enjoy the game, the open air or any amount of serenity due to noise and 40,000 plus people all waiting for the camera on their puss's so they can see themselves on a 500x400 foot TV in centerfield - EVERYTHING except Baseball.

Not at Wrigley .. it's about the game there. Totally unique and a complete thrill for the baseball fan.

At wrigley, you'll see a batters face, his number and batting average .. the line score on the upper deck edge and that's it. If you don't have a program, you had better know the players on both teams.

I will also not forget my first visit to wrigley because the cubbies were playin the braves. The atlanta pitcher was just brought up from triple A and had pitched in only 1 or 2 games where he got rocked for 8 runs. He had a 4 run 1st, and 6 run 2nd inning and was mercifully yanked sometime in the 3rd. At that point he had an ERA of over 21. Welcome to the big leagues.

Don't letum change a goddamned thing Bob.

I'll second the vote for Wrigley being one of the best places to see a Baseball game! I've seen two games there and they were both great.

Although the last time I was supposed to go to a game there it got cancelled. It was 9/11. Something else came up that day that I would have gladly wished never happened.:(

My three most favorite stadiums I have personally attended games has been Wrigley Field, Fenway Park and Camden Yards.

Well I totally agree that Wrigley Field is among the best places to watch baseball. It is a total PITA to park near there, so I rarely go, but dad used to have season tickets for the Cubs. At one time I had season tickets to Comisky Park (the real one) where White Sox played before it was torn down and a new modern stadium was built. It was a easy place to get to from where I live, so I went to a lot more Sox games but remained a Cubs fan. Several years later, the lovely Mrs_B, got season tickets from her job as a private banker to the NEW Comisky Park, and they were "Club Level" seats so we had access to the private club, bar, restaurant, etc. That was a great way to see a game, but I admit that most of the time was spent not watching baseball (which certainly goes to DAP's point that Wrigley Field is a great place to go to WATCH THE GAME of baseball).

The last game I went to was a Cubs game. I took some buddies. We rented a limo-bus stocked with beer and had the driver wait outside the park. That is the way to go to/from Wrigley! Since it was a large group I had trouble getting seats together so we didn't have the best seats, but no matter what, watching a game Wrigley Field is a great time. We were on the main level at 3rd base, but probably 3/4th of the way back into the stands. Still, the park is small so we could see everything.

Honestly, if you want to watch a game, enjoy the crowd, and feel like you are part of the action, Wrigley Field is a great experience.

:tiphat:

BTW . . . here are some quotations attributed to (aimed at) the Cubs.
  • "Noise pollution can't be that much of a problem [at Wrigley]. There's nothing to cheer about."
    • --State Rep. John F. Dunn, arguing for the installation of lights at Wrigley Field
  • "If I managed the Cubs, I'd be an alcoholic."
    • --Whitey Herzog
  • "There's nothing wrong with this team that more pitching, more fielding and more hitting couldn't help."
    • --Bill Buckner
  • "You get tired of looking at garbage in your own backyard."
    • --Cubs manager Lee Elia in 1983 about why the Cubs got rid of so many players. Elia was fired later that same season.
  • "The only bad thing about being released by the Cubs is that they made me keep my season tickets."
    • --Ken Rietz, ex-Cub third baseman
