I know Brent is not a member here at the forums, but some of you guys probably know him. His guard unit was activated a few months ago. He's been in training for a while and now has arrived somewhere in Iraq.

A few moments ago I got an email from him and thought I would post it here for those of you who might consider him a friend. I will be sending him some care packages on a fairly regular basis so if you want to pass on any good wishes, let me know.
We made it in tonight around 9:00. We made stops in Gander New
Foundland and Budapest Hungary. It is 3:30 am and I am now about to go to
bed.

Re: Brent Pepper, some of you know him...

Here is another quick update from Brent . . .

It was 3:30 am when I wrote that last e-mail. Since then I have had a
meal and a few hours of sleep. The plane ride over was not as bad as I
thought. The total travel time was about 18hrs. We made a stop in
Gander New Foundland for about an hour. The temp there was 54 degrees.
When we got back on the plane the flight attendants started the seat
belt and oxygen mask talk again and when 1LT Brad Stark started imitating
them, she asked if he wanted to do the talk. So he took the props from
her. See the attached picture. Gander was nice after being in south MS
for 2 months. We were then supposed to go to Ireland, but that stop
was cancelled and we went straight on to Budapest Hungary. I had heard of
Budapest and thought it might be a big city. It was spread out, but it
did not have any really big structures. 4 to 5 story buildings that
looked like apartment complexes were the biggest buildings I saw. The
country side was pretty though. We were told to stay on the plan
e when we landed. However, a few people saw fit to step out onto the
steps to stretch. I was at the bottom step talking to our commander and
ask him if maybe one foot on Hungary would hurt anything for a picture.
He said one foot wouldn't hurt. See attached picture. Then Brad said,
"surely 2 feet wouldn't hurt". Within about 5 minutes there were about
50 people off of the planes smoking and picking up Hungarian rocks.
Then a guy in a little go kart sized truck came driving up and signaled
for us to get back on the plane. We got to Kuwait City around 9:00 or
10:00 pm local time and the blast of hot air that I felt when I stepped
off the plane was more than I expected. I thought I had stepped off
behind the jet exhaust. We then took a miserable 3 hour bus ride on a bus
that was obviously designed for people no taller than 5'6". We
unloaded our luggage and got to our tents. They have a floor and very good
air conditioning.

I have been lucky to be able to get to a phone today and get access to
the internet. I will e-mail each of you individually as time allows,
but for now I will be sending out bulk e-mails. It will still be a
couple of weeks before I have a permanent mailing address for sending
packages/letters. I will let you know when I get there.

Re: Brent Pepper, some of you know him...

While I have never met Brent, please let him know that I am thinking of him and the other boys in Iraq. I hope he comes home safe, sound, and quickly. If there is anything he needs, please let us know (Seattle is the coffee capital of the U.S. after all).

Re: Brent Pepper, some of you know him...

Here are some new photos along with a message from Brents.
It is 13:52 hours and it is 100 degrees. I went out and took a drive
in my newly aquired JD Gator this morning. I got a chance to visit
Abraham's Oasis. See the attached pictures. There are old MiG jets
everywhere. I leaned over in one and snatched some sort of gauge out of it.
This place is huge. I drove the perimeter yesterday. The junkyard
looks ineteresting. That is where I saw the tracked radar vehicle. There
are junked MiGs and anti aircraft weapons there also.

Re: Brent Pepper, some of you know him...

Here is a little Thanksgiving update from Iraq. And a couple things to be thankful for, Brents got a promotion to MAJOR and will get a 2 week leave in December to come home for a visit.

Classification: UNCLASSIFIED//FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY
It has been a while since I sent an update, but that was because there really hasn't been a lot going on, at least not anything interesting. Last week I was in Qatar for a 4 day pass. I left Saturday, November 11th for what was supposed to be a 3 hour flight. 12 hours later I arrived in Qatar. When an Air Force Loadmaster says, "This isn't Delta Airlines", the proper response isn't "That's obvious". They don't like sarcasm. When you go to Camp As Saliyah on pass they have different activities you can sign up for such as golf, deep sea fishing, cultural tour, water skiing, desert safari ride, etc. Half of these had been cancelled temporarily, so we didn't sign up for anything. You can also put your name on the waiting list to be taken off post by any soldier stationed there. We were lucky enough to get to go out the first two nights by waiting long enough until they got to our names. We went to a large mall in Doha that had an indoor sled hill. An ice covered slope that you rode and inner tube down. For the first 2 feet it seemed rather slow. At the bottom of the hill when you impacted the padded wall at what seemed like 60 MPH, reality set in. Not to self, turn side ways before impact. We got 3 runs down the "Icy Hill of Death" for $4. When we got to the parking garage we saw a jacked up Ford F250 with a Qatari in his Arab garb getting out of the truck. In this wealthy country it is not common to see someone getting out of a truck like that. A Mercedes or Bentley maybe, but not an F250. He told us he has it shipped from Orange county California where he lived. He even showed us his passport to prove to us that he was an American citizen.
I ran into a classmate of mine from Quartermaster school who was stationed there at As Saliyah and he took us out two nights. We went to the Gold Souqs. Souqs is their word for shop. Most of the gold they sold was 21 or 23 karat. Hanging in the windows was what looked like Mr. T starter sets. No matter how ornate the designs were, the pieces were sold based on weight. We left there and went to the ghanim which is the old market place. Some of the areas looked like scenes from "Raiders of the Lost Ark". Here you could find hand made crafts from all over the middle east, mostly from Iran. There were also vendors who sold spices by the scoop or cinnamon by the stick. There is a restaurant in that area that hosted an outdoor concert. It is really something to see that many men in white robes dancing an Arab jig. Another thing you don't see back home was a shop that sold falcons. The falcons sold for about $6000.
Thanksgiving is approaching and we are trying to celebrate it much the same way we would at home. The DFACs will be serving turkey and dressing tomorrow. As a tribute to our kids back home and the things that they do at school to celebrate Thanksgiving we have been drawing hand turkeys to hang on the wall. Aren't you proud of us?
The biggest news is that my promotion became official and I was pinned a major by COL White and COL Brown yesterday morning.
I guess that is all for now. I will see many of you when I come home for 2 weeks in December. Until then, have a great Thanksgiving.
