Brake rotors are now disposable (like brake pads)!?!?

One of the Mazda's needed new brakes. I'm at the FL condo and don't have tools so I took it to a shop.
They said that on newer vehicles, the brake rotors are considered a normal wear item and need replaced when you replace the pads.
Never heard of that.
He did show me how thin they are now. :(

hmmm. . . never heard of that but I tend to agree with Fred, seems like a great way to ding owners while at the same time creating a new income stream for the dealership.

Benz does it this way:
Job 1 front pads
Job 2 front pads. Front rotors, rear pads
Job 3 front pads
Job 4 front pads & rotors, rear pads & rotors
Replace brake fluid every two years.

Fortunately, unless you have a black series car, the parts are cheap.

How many miles on the vehicle and which Mazda model? Had ours done by the dealer on our 2015 CX5 at about 120,000 miles. Rotors were okay.

It's something new that many mfgr's are doing starting about 5-7 years ago.
It's a 2020 CX-5 with about 35K miles.
And don't get me started on dealer service pricing. They wanted around $1000/axle to do the rotors and pads.
New rotors/pads per axle are around $100 and take about an hour to install.

Sounds like a cheap wrench set would have saved you some $$$

Agreed. I did get it done (rear axle) for $400. This was new to me so live-and-learn.
I have a rental car + our Mazda so I was going to do the original issue (tire rotation) myself because I have 2 jacks but we opted to do the dealer for the $29 rotate and full inspection. They caught the brake issue, I took it elsewhere for the work.
I feel naked at our condo in terms of tools. I have what I need for taking care of the building but nothing for vehicles.

Back when we had the pads changed on our CX5, the dealer charged us around $450 to do all 4 locations on the vehicle. Plus gave us a loaner CX5 for the day until ours was ready. Seems to me that dealership is a shady outfit. Right now our 2022 has 68,000+ miles on it and no signs of needing pad or rotor replacement soon. 35,000 miles on a set of pads or rotors is not very long.

One of the rear calipers was a little stuck so it wore out that pad/rotor quicker than it should have.
We have 2 CX-5's but have owned them for less than 2 years. Can't say how the previous owner drove it (hard on the brakes?).

Could be that they were hard on the brakes. Also could have been a bad batch of parts when it/they were manufactured.
