I got a violin from a flea market for my sons bday, as a joke. It was this beat up thing, with an intact but beat up case and bow. Guys wanted $30 for it. I got him down to $10.
My son wanted a guitar for his bday, but mentioned he thought the violin was cool, especially after seeing video of Lucia Micarelli and Alison Krauss.
Well, I gave him this funky violin. Problem is, he thought it was cool! Then he opened his other present, a Stratocaster with a practice amp and stuff. He thought that was amazing cool, but still liked the violin too.
So, finally, six months later, I take it to a shop to have it checked out. This is a very reputable shop, and the owner is an amazing luthier.
So I tell them the story, then show them. I am expecting to hear it is a cheap wall hanger. No... I turns out is a 100 year old Spanish import of pretty decent quality. It needs about $100 of repairs, but when repaired will be worth $800-1000

Hot Diggity!
I only see that stuff on antiques road show, or hear about someone else getting that kind of deal!
We'll see how it looks and sounds when I get it back after the holidays...
