No, I didn’t quit on the Kristi

I disappeared for a while, but haven’t quit on the Kristi. Life’s been busy and now with two cats, my time is split further.

What’s new? KT3 #00045, 3rd KT3 unit produced. I really thought the tracks were going to be a quick, simple job 🤣. I hope to never do them again. For much of the past couple of years, it’s been tough for me to find more than an hour or two at a time to work on anything snowcat related. However, eventually I managed to get it done.

As of now, #45 is a running machine. I was able to fabricate a new corner window from acrylic. I used a locking rubber gasket from trimlock that I’m really happy with. I found it easiest to heat the acrylic and then quickly install it into the gasket and form it in place. I’m surprised it worked so well. New flywheel, starter, boiled out the gas tank, put a new fuel pump and alternator in (previous owner had rigged up an alternator in place of the generator). Regarding the alternator, what was there was a very low amperage unit and it was causing a parasitic draw. I replaced with a larger 1-wire unit. Required a new bracket to be fabricated, which I’m not completely happy with, but works for now.

I replaced all the bogey wheels with new one piece wheels and tires from etrailer. They are a standard size so will be easy to replace when needed. I had to put a 5mm spacer on the back wheel because it was rubbing on the frame very slightly. Plenty of play in the wheel guides to allow for that and hasn’t seemed to cause any issues so far.

I don’t plan on much more than field testing her this winter somewhere where I can recover easily. I don’t know the machine well enough to feel comfortable with getting stuck far from home. Work will continue as I can make it happen. In the meantime, the Snow-Trac ST4 is operating as A-team. I focused on interior creature comforts (primarily sound insulation) and routine maintenance over the summer on that machine.

Attaching a few photos of the very slow progress.

Yeah, the original were hickory, but this was a much cheaper solution. It won’t rot; just not sure about breakage over time

Yeah, no problem in the tensioner. It’s sitting pretty close to the middle of its adjustment on both sides. I do wish the wheels weren’t white, but for now, they will do.

Very impressive track build. Lot of thread showing past the nuts on the synthetic material. We double-nutted but left about the same amount and call ‘em ice cleats. They will “work weld” over time after running on hard ground. Chews the hell out of the asphalt driveway, too.

Any chance you may sell your old wheels?
I only have 4 of the old wheels. Some miscommunication resulted in 4 of them disappearing from the garage while I was gone during the week. The 4 I have are available and I'd be happy to give them to you if you can use them. They still have the tires on them so might be expensive to ship. If you ever make your way out to Montana, then you can pick them up for free. However, I would like to get some time in on the replacements to be sure they are going to work out for me before getting rid of what I have. Just need some snow to fall. It's been very unseasonably warm here this winter; high today in Billings is 59!

Thanks. Yeah, I considered cutting them shorter, but also ended up double-nutting them. The photo with them coiled on the floor was before I made that decision. And yes, they definitely do tear up asphalt. I'm also wondering if they might be a problem on the trailer, if they catch the metal of the grate. I've kept it off the trailer for now because it's being stored outside and I don't want to make it easy to steal. Should have indoor storage next summer.

We use a wooden deck tilt trailer and it gets chewed up, particularly on the leading edge. I would recommend that you find some leftover rubber belting and bolt it down onto your trailer. Might save problems for both the trailer deck and the track.

Good Idea, will definitely do that. Thanks for the suggestion!
