Military Snow Trac

Hydev

New member
Hi,

I have recently acquired a Snow Trac that I intend to restore to its former glory. I fell in love with them when I saw some in Nenana, Alaska whilst there on holiday in 2015. Its taken me a while to find one in the UK, but I finally did - chassis number #1914!

I am currently researching it and using this forum for a lot reading and prep for the fun ahead. I believe this is an ex-millitary one (British?) as it is painted green over red, has the lifting eyes on the front, towing fitments at back, fabric roof, has a 24v system and appears to have had a very well fitted extra fan fitted into the air cooler that runs off the belts. If anyone can provide more information on the military ones in general or even this particular one then I would be very very grateful.

I have attached some initial pictures for you all.

Thanks

Mike

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I would like to get this registered for road use in the UK. So if anyone has an advice they can give me to help me with the DVLA then I would be much appreciated. Even better if someone has already registered a Snow Trac with the DVLA then let me know :-)

Welcome hy dev.

I agree your rig is likely up fitted for service somewhere. 1900's is a later one. And ive seen a few of those aux fans fit on st's some as early as the 900's

Enjoy the build!

Hi Mike, i'm based in Uk and have restored a few snow-tracs - including military one number 1799 which is detailed here https://www.forumsforums.com/threads/military-st4-1799.89968/
Do you have the original military commission plate that was fixed to the dash? - that will give you the original royal navy number (they were all supplied to Royal Marines).
To road register you need to get a NOVA from HM revenue and customs but it is a bit of a faff and your probably better off not mentioning the military history as it just complicates things. If you apply to DVLA with form V55 it should not be difficult to get registration as several are already on their database including my current one serial number 330 and uk registration AFM 945A - if you look that up on DVLA site it will give you tax class etc (historic vehicle).
You will need a certificate of authenticity, which you can get off Kenth in Sweden who is on the Forum under Archive Holder as long as you know the serial number it was issued with - should be on data plate at rear or stamped into the lifting hooks at the front.
For general snow-trac info there is loads on the forum - search "its a surprise" by Lyndon or "ST4 back from the dead" which is about my first snow-trac restoration and goes into a lot more detail than the military one.
All the best with your project
Ian

Hi Puckle - you have made my day - you really have :-) I haven't seen a military plate on the dash - the only one I can see is the Activ one listing the VechicleNo/ChasissNo/CodeNo. I didn't even notice/know that there was data plate on the rear or on the lifting eyes. Though the lifting eyes are painted red - so might need to scrape it off. Roll on tomorrow!

I have read through one of your restoration builds online so I will read the other one you have sent through. Can't wait - you did a great job on it.

Registration.... thank you for your advice, I filled out a V55 already and was rejected due to certificate of age and NOVA. To be honest I read the HMRC/NOVA thing and thought "I have no chance". However you have given me a bit of hope :-) Can you let me know via here or PM more details on how to do this and the steps? Once I have the serial number then I will certainly reach out to Kenth for it. I feel I have a chance of getting this registered now :-)

Oh and Lydon is a Snow Trac god! Read lots of his articles already.

Mike

Hi Mike, if you let Kenth know the serial/chassis number 1914 he should be able to supply certificate and maybe order book entry which may also contain the military registration it was allocated. I have inserted photo of NOVA I received for mine and doc file of letter sent to obtain this - address for correct department is on the NOVA. I did fill in the V55 for this one but ended up selling it to a military museum in Germany before I was successful in getting it registered.
I am based near Utoxetter in Staffordshire, your welcome to pop in and have a chat if your down this way.
Cheers, Ian

Thank Ian - that is so helpful :-) I have download copies of those - you might want to remove/redact your address so there not exposed to the internet. I can't tell you how helpful that! Utoxetter isn't too bad for me so I will reach out over DM if I'm ever passing.

I have just search for a member called 'Kenth' and it has returned no members - can you let me know his handle so I can DM him?

Thanks

Mike

Lyndon did so much to document the ST. I did find there is a bit of differences with the later ones. EX Seals on the variator bearings. A few other things. Nothing major but something to remember.
