Just curious why not aluminum?

Aluminum tanks can have problems too. I welded up numerous holes in a world famous freighter.

………. Amen to that,... '' in a perfect world'' , we would be looking for things to keep occupied, instead of trying to '' keep ahead of the curve'' , and PM ,...to save on the wallet....etc,.

After welding on the mounting brackets, I cleaned the interior of the tank, metal prepped it and poured in the tank sealer. In between flipping it around numerous times, I removed the leaking left brake actuator for re-sealing.

Couldn't figure out how to get the end plug out until Boggie told me about the tiny setscrew holding the end plug in - that guy is a vast storehouse of SkiDozer knowledge and I never thought to look for that screw in the side of the cylinder. He also mentioned I could get a new chevron cup at NAPA, so while the tank drained out the excess sealant, I drove down and picked up a couple of seals. The cylinder has seen better days, pretty ugly inside from water ingress, but the bore was excellent - unlike the spring. So I painted the spring and cylinder with some POR and tomorrow I'll reassemble.

Painted the outside of the tank with the first coat of POR as well.

Steering actuator rebuilt, works great now. Next up is to extend the exhaust pipe aft, far enough to clear the extended cab. It will come up adjacent to the fuel tank, on the other side of the tunnel. Pipe is kind of close to the right steer actuator, so I'll build a heat shield into the mount bracket I plan to fab up for where the pipe makes its final turn up. It will run up the back of the aft wall of the extended cab.

Slowly but surely making progress. Mechanically the cat is mostly done, hydraulics ready to go back in, battery box relocated aft of the passenger seat, the hydraulic reservoir will go next to it. I’m trying to get as much finalized as possible before putting the cab on, access is so much easier now. I spent the afternoon today grinding on the front of the cab, should have it on soon.

Looking good Jim!, when your done with that one, I have a couple dozen more you can keep going with. at your fast pace, less than a years work

One time we considered taking two cabs and placing the one as normal and the other backwards on the back. So no one would know if we’re coming or going

I'm allowed only one project (toy) at a time. And in between each toy project I have to do a bathroom or kitchen remodel - rules!

Cut a bunch of square tube today, after much scraping of undercoating from the interior of the cab, I straightened the sides of the aft part and squared it all up and tacked up the pieces.

Looks great , nice work , one small thing and some may disagree but my personal experience with these cats was that the steering cylinders , being mounted to the diff cover , would after time dislodge the cover , breaking the seal , which would allow water ingress , not great . So to mitigate the problem I built a mount for the cylinders which bolted to the tunnel sides , seemed to solve the problem .

Had a look guess it was too far back so I struck out on finding any pics of that . The cat has been gone a while now but the mount was fairly simple , just two 3 x3 x 1/4 angle around 5 inches long with 2 holes near the ends of each piece and a piece of 2x2 x1/4 square tube welded between them to fit snugly between the tunnel sides , 4 small tabs with holes welded onto the tube positioned to line up with the existing cylinder mounts then the whole thing gets bolted into position just above the old mounts (drill the tunnel where the holes in the angle end up , then bolt it up . hope I explained it well enough , cheers

Long day, but I was successful in getting the cab back on the cat - most of it anyhow. Big milestone, now I need to finish framing out the sides, make a couple of aft doors and paint.

Made new mounting bases for the new rear seats, then got the sheet metal welded onto the roof. I'll get another bottle of C25 tomorrow in preparation for the long turkey weekend - during which it will be sunny and cold, perfect for getting out the doors and side wall framing and sheet metal.

Also cleaned up (de-rusted) the hydraulic tank and painted it with some grey POR-15. Still lots to do...

I've been busy cutting, grinding and welding steel and making aft cabin panels and doors. Installed an external plug for the block heater and rebuilt the original front doors. The engine is very quiet in its insulated box. Lots more to do, slowly but surely.

My nephew came over from Montana for the Christmas weekend and helped me weld and grind, and grind some more. Getting closer to primer...

Then, on his way back to Ronan, he stopped at an antique store in St. Regis and found this 1947 edition of Science and Mechanics with a Tucker on the cover, so he sent it to me. Pretty cool!

Has anyone ever seen those "rubber overshoes" the article describes for the Tucker?

I was thinking the same thing about the plane crash. But then I saw the bottom of the cover where it says "How pilotless flight works". So, it doesn't work but no one was in the plane maybe?

Yes, the article goes on to say that the cost of airline pilots at almost $14,000 a year can be eliminated soon with the new pilotless airplanes. So, 73 years later, we’re talking about passenger carrying drones... probably will still be talking about it in the year 2525.

Slowly but surely, progress is made. All lower metal parts prepped and epoxy primered, cab bolted down on new rubber gaskets for good now, roof epoxy primed, just need to sand and prime the sides, then finish paint. Been raining since the last millennium here, not good for painting ?

Much less filler being used than original. On the roof, I used Tiger fiberglass filler, really strong stuff. The scaffold is very handy for high work, much more stable than ladders for welding, grinding and sanding.

Doubt they ever left the factory drawing board. Probably the closest thing that came from the idea were these:

There was also a video of a 442 going round years ago that had a set like that. But the blocks are hard mounted to the track, not really 'overshoes'.
