Carl Icahn tells a little story about how he fired the whole 12 storey building of employees from a company he bought stock in. Carl C. Icahn is an American billionaire activist investor. He is the founder and controlling shareholder of Icahn Enterprises, a public company and a diversified conglomerate holding company based in New York City.

I once worked for a large corporation who often bought mediocre companies and found the same thing. We couldn't figure out what the peopled getting paid were doing to get paid. It was so easy to turn them to profit. I love Icahn's reference to the yellow pad.
Do the numbers 'til they make sense and then cut away what doesn't

We used the KISS system. Keep it simple stupid.

I read once where GM was much like that. As I understand it, they still are.

Once companies get over 500-1000 employees the inefficiency of the layers of management becomes exponential. Some companies can survive to around 1000 employees if they work hard on the culture but past 1000 the peter principal just takes over.

I'm always happiest working in small 100-200 employee start-ups.
