What's Your Opinion

Gone But Not Forgotten
About ten years ago we had a county sheriff on his own time went out and got a little tipsy. On his way home he hit a pedestrian and killed him. He left the scene of the accidnet. Police found him out a few days later and he may have even turned himself in because of his inside information. He was convicted of manslaughter and served his time. Now he is out and took a test to be a local fireman. His test score was the highest of about 30 people and has been hired along with two other people. Now the city or local area is in a big uproar because the city hired this guy.

So what is everyone's opinino. Should the city have hired him because of his past or not?

The guy did his time, right? So what is the problem? Do they feel he can't be trusted in that type of position or depended on?

What do they expect him to do for a living?

Being a fireman is a postion of trust. If he screws it up, that would be to bad. The man made a mistake and had paid for it. If he does the job, he should have it.

Because he scored the highest on the test which involves physical and mental I would want him on the squad. He served his time and now everyone should move on. I don't know why everyone is so upset about it. Another mountain out of a molehill.

To be a cop, you need to have a clean record. If there is no such stipulation for a fireman, then I see no problem.

Of all the kids that I went to school with, the ones that got into the most trouble became cops after they returned from Vietnam. I always thought that the line between cops and thugs was a very thin one.

He's done His time ,and most likely learned from His mistake. Obviously He wants to serve the community. So let Him do so.

..."On his way home he hit a pedestrian and killed him. He left the scene of the accidnet."...

Guess I'll be the lone wolf here, If he had remained at the scene (drunk or not) I agree with hiring him. But since he bailed, that presents a serious issue with character and reponsibilities.

Sure...he did his time and probably learned a lesson too, but...??? I should elaborate more, but I'll leave it at that.
Just my .02

I'd say hire him. He obviously focused himself and was able to excel on the firemans test. The man needs work and hopefully learned his lesson. Scoring high is a good indicator of that. Most places have a probation period that would give them a chance to evaluate further but I'd wager he'd be a good employee, most because of his test score.

Have you all noticed how hard it is to get a fair paying job for anyone without a few degrees behind them? Manufactoring jobs are going away. Plenty of fast food type jobs but noone can support a family on that. I feel for anyone having to look for gainful employment now days. If you don't have a specialty you better focus on something and try to excel, it's your only chance.

Never a truer word spoken. We have started bring in chinese meat workers and welders. They argue we don't have people with the skills to do these jobs, what a load of bull, its all about profits at the expense of heritage, general good standard of living for ALL, and probably most importantly what past Australians worked and fought for (this includes wars for our freedom)

I try to enstill some entrepreneur in my 15 y.o. son. I had a guy come around to do some concrete work this past summer and he was just a kid who was referred to me. But he had the spirit! The guys in his crew quit or something and I ended up helping out, but he was doing well, employing others, in charge of his own career and excelling based on his own merit and not some office politics. Another younger friend of mine is trying to be a cop and spent the summer slugging paving stones. He was telling me about these huge new homes that required a rip-out of the paving stones and then a bed of concrete to be poured under them and re-set. He said that his boss could not hire enough people, only did quotes and shmoozing, and had some fine wheels! Another older friend is my business lawyer and he is a successful lawyer - Queens Council, which is some minor political appointment here. And he confided that he he was bored with his job and had been for some time - complained that he was like an hourly employee the way they did they're billing.

Regardless of whether you have a degree, some of the most satisfying careers - and most secure - are in creating a business.

Okay, I gotta find my French-English dictionary for a little extra credit project I have...

Bonehead is a fireman and we know how reliable he is. :yum: :yum: :yum: :yum:
There's one thing you can rely on- me telling you to shove it where the sun don't shine!:moon: :D

I say hire the guy. If his boss and crew know about his past (as you indicate that everyone there does), they will stick a microscope up his butt and watch his every move. It seems to me that they will boot him if he steps out of line one nanometer.
