Track Belt Backing Plate Question

The profile does look a lot like the ones Weatherby made for his Thiokol.

But I would think the bolt spacing would be different between a Thiokol and a Tucker. Tucker belts are about 4 5/8" wide and looking at the craigslist ad the bolts are properly spaced with no extra holes...

I exchanged some PM's with Weatherby about his and he told me he and a tool and die maker friend made the male and female dies to do the stamping. From those PM's it was a lot of work.

I don't think there are many folks as dedicated as Weatherby, and there are almost 250 of those double length backing plates. I've just gotta think he bought them somewhere...

When I used to volunteer at a little ski hill in my area, the had a 1969 Thiokol Imp and a 1980 Tucker 1642. That looks very close to that machine (it's probably a 1642 but a few years newer or older than 1980). The grousers on that look an awful lot like the ones I remember on the 1642 I used to work on. I suspect that they are OEM grousers.

Sorry, I just realized that you were talking about the backing plates. I can't remember what they looked like on that unit.

Boggie/Brad,

Any ideas or suggestions???

Hello, I'm out of town for a bit what can I help with? Are you asking if those backers can be made? Sure ! Any fab shop with a press brake can make those.
If you wanted lots and lots then a die would be in order we could build one if wanted but you would want to make lots of them to justify the cost of tooling
My guess is most fab shops could produce those from aluminum if that's what you wanted or steel in quantity for 3-4 bucks each

Hope this answers your question?

Brad,

Thanks for reply. I was really hoping you'd recognize the profile/cross-section and say it was commercially available.

When you use the phrase "in quantity" what kind of number are you talking about. (I'm guessing more than I need...)

I think Weatherby set the standard in his restoration, both in terms of quality of workmanship and attention to detail. The Tucker in the ad, while a nice looking machine, is nowhere in the ball park of Weatherby's Thiokol. I just can't believe the owner made those from scratch....

We certainly can make them for you if you want? I wouldn't spend the money on a die if all you want to do is one machine
