Those "Oil Guys" on TV

Hey ..... anybody else ever watched those oil drillers looking for back yard oil back east??
Seems to be a funny show .I like those old farts . That one old guy who lives in a mobile home cracks me up . I do think he is the real deal .

Do those guys actually make the money they claim ?

I looked at buying a property a number of years ago in southern Colorado that had its own Natural gas well that went with the sale . The house used the gas right out of the ground .

Nope Al, I don't watch reality shows as a rule. Besides having done it for over 25 years I wouldn't get any pleasure from watching some good ol' boys screw it up. Some of those little independents make me really, really nervous.

Yea, the characters may be "real". One thing the oil business isn't short of is "characters". As for making money, there is the potential to make lots of money. There is also the potential to lose lots of money. It's a high risk business. There are lots of wildcatters in my wife's family history and they still receive royalties from some of the stuff that her grandfather was involved in. Also, my next door neighbor is an independent oil man. It's usually boom or bust.

As for having your house tied in to a producing gas well for free gas from the wellhead, it used to be one of the things that a landowner or mineral rights owner could negotiate as part of their contract. It hasn't been common practice for a very long time. There was too much liability for the producers and they had to start injecting mercaptan (I think) into the gas so the user could smell it so all those freebies went away.
