The recent deaths of the Russian military recruits made me think of Patrick Stewart's words from Star Trek: First Contact. I don't normally compare art to life, but in this case, I can't help but feel what he said does relate to the event.
"You may encounter Enterprise crew members who have been already assimilated. Don't hesitate to fire. Believe me, you'll be doing them a favor."
In the context of the shooting of the recruits, the ones responsible might have believed their fellow cadets needed to die for the same reason as the assimilated crew members of the Enterprise.
