SUV + 4WD = happy commuting!

It is no secret that I love snow. And I am also a happy SUV owner.

All summer long the morons at the gas stations in their tiny econo-box cars would laugh as I pumped $60-$70 worth of gas into my tank. Sure they got twice the gas mileage I got, but I also had a tank that was 2.5 times bigger so I could actually go farther on a tankful. :D

Well $3+ per gallon didn't last too long but just as the season change the snow has returned to our area.:coolshade

1 modest storm and the little econo-box drivers found themselves in the ditches. We've got more snow coming today that is predicted to make the Chicago area 'rush hour' a nightmare. But with the added visibility afforded by a taller sitting SUV and the grip of 4x4 all I can do is laugh as I drive past them.

Bob,

four wheel drive sure can be handy when the roads get slick and you need to go up a hill. It can be very enjoyable. But I can see why people buy econo box cars.

Remind me again what you would recommend to a person considering buying a 60 hp tractor for a 2 acre piece of property which needs to be worked into acceptable lawn.

I am sure you can read where I am going with that statement. Please dont be mad by my comments. I own a 4x4 pickup and paid extra to get an AWD car for my wife. I just think many people have their reasons for buying an econo-box car over an SUV 4x4. Most of which are financial which do not justify buying a 4x4 when living in the city.. Unlike you who lives out in the country and does not have luxury of having a road deptment who is quick to deal with clearing the roads. If I lived in the city I certainly would not have as much need for 4x4 or AWD. To me it seems silly to have a huge SUV or 4x4 and live in town.

btw,

my only accident I have had was on a day a winter storm came in. I was driving my 4x4 pickup and an "econo-box" which was in front of me in the adjacent lane lost controll and spun out into my lane. I T-boned him.

stay safe out there in your 4x4, its the other cars you have to worry about and the other maniacs which thinksthat 4x4 means they can stop faster too.

My only gripe is with the econo-box owners who hop up on their soap boxes and suggest that I am using up all the gas, destroying the planet, and committing all other types of enviornmental evils just because I drive a SUV. They jump to conclusions, have no clue what my needs are, and they passed judgement on me at the the gas pumps all summer long.

To that sub-set of econo-box owners I say :moon:

Me too, especially the last sentence.

All of our winter vehicles HAVE TO have 4wd or AWD. We have a FWD van but it sits if they're calling for anything bad (like they are tomorrow as we're already under a advisory).
