Polyurethane over painted concrete

I'm in the process of finishing my basement.

There are 2 small rooms that we don't want to carpet. A storage room and the utility room.

We purchased some "polyurethane for floors". The directions only mention putting it over wood.

Does anyone see an issue of putting it over a painted concrete floor?

Hi Brian! I'm not sure if it's a good idea or not. On the can, there should be a 1-800 number to the manufacturer. It may depend on what kind of paint you have on the floor right now, such as enamel, or some sort of latex, or even alkyd based. Look for the number and give 'em a call.:tiphat::beer:

Brian,
4 years ago when I built the new garage and sewing room we did what you are suggesting. I painted the concrete floor of the sewing room with the usual floor epoxy. On top of that the wife stenciled some designs and I followed with 2 healthy coats of poly. I havn't had a single problem! I did throw some play sand in the paint (very sparingly) to help with the potential slickness should the floor get wet. I don't see why you couldn't put it in the poly.

Well, I think I'll be returning this product.

John - I did call the company. They do not recommend their product for concrete or any painted surface. Although they said they hadn't tested (yea, right... like I'm going to believe that), they said it could cloud/haze or not stick at all.

Cowboy - I didn't use an epoxy paint.

They (MinWax) recommended a product called "H&C® SHIELD PLUSTM ULTRA CONCRETE STAIN". Looking at their site, this seems like the perfect product.
