The Summer Nationals started today. One of my high school kids is competing. Actually several are competing, but one in particular. A total jelly body nerd as a freshman, now a senior who will be going to Michigan State to study physics and now in much better physical condition, just pulled off something close to impossible in the tournament.
He won 4 of his 6 morning bouts. That puts him firmly in the top half and set up nicely for the second portion of the competition. 333 in today's event. He went in ranked 266th. Currently he is ranked 67th.
Even if he loses everything the rest of the day he will finish higher than any other kid I've coached (except for Dasha, and I really was never her real coach). He works hard, he is smart, he learns from his mistakes. This is a great achievement for him. He's got only 3 years of fencing, and 1 year of real competitive fencing and he's doing great at the national championships.
Really really proud of this kid. (left side of photo, red socks)
