On Recycling and Energy Conservation

My husband has been reading a lot of books lately about Recycling and Energy Conservation. I am really happy that he takes his time on this kind of things and he seems so passionate about it. His parents thinks otherwise though. They keep on saying that my husband is just wasting his time on matters like this and asked me to convince him to stop what he is doing. How can I convince them to support their son when it seems that they do not want to deal with any of this?

Don't. Who cares what they think about what you do with your garbage. Does your happiness, the 2 of you, hinge on their approval ?
Why is it even any of their business?
Look at the big picture, it's garbage. Why do they need to know what you do with it.

Ditto. :thumb:

Thanks. It just frustrates me that they say all negative things particularly our stand on the possibility of getting solar panels. But hey, you are right. We should not really care.

Yes that is really frustrating but you know what as long as you support your husband then everything would be okay. I for one would love to acquire a solar panel for our house. It's quite pricey but the effects of it makes it all worthy.

Visiting the kids over the holidays, I noticed they have a container for plastic, one for cans, one for paper, one for bottles, on so on. Good for them, I say. That is what they prefer to do.

I have one container. It all goes there and goes to the rubbish man on Saturday. I am too old to mess around like that.

Generational thing. Don't worry bout it. Do your thing.

What is this recycling and energy conservation of which you speak? Will it make my boat go faster? If not, foggetabodit.

at 6 bucks a gallon for heating oil I'm all for saving energy. wished I could get the rest of my family to put on some clothes rather than turn up the thermostat. electricity is the same cost's me 300 bucks a month I wished I could do something about it ,but the billing is done on a 3 year average so it I threw the service breaker my bill would be the same. as for garbage I do the same industrial waste is different my company recycles antifreeze and burns used engine oil from services in a special heater not only do we do the world some good we limit the waste we generate by making it a usable material.

Hi.Thanks for the reply. I am not only pertaining to its benefits on boats alone. But in general. Sorry for my confusing post. I just thought that it is okay to post here since I am on an off-topic subforum.

Thanks for all your thoughts. We are actually doing recycling (segregation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable) and we are thinking of using solar panels. But, personally, I am not sure either since the cost is too much and after reading a lot of case studies (here, if you are interested), I am uncertain. Although, the main concern seems to be generally good. I will keep on reading though.

Sometimes sarcasm is difficult to recognize.

Honey you can say whatever you want here and recycle whatever you want. I believe you should be able to do whatever you want. Have at it.

Just do not tell me I must.

We do waste segregation in our household also. Been training the kids to do the same so I took the effort to label our trash can properly :)

separate but equal no mixing of the garbage in my household. I guess I'm equal that way every thing goes in one can.

Hey, I'm an old coot and I recycle ... up to a point. I'm not a fanatic.

I recycle most papers. I recycle aluminum cans. I recycle most cardboard. I take all three with me when I go to our Rotary Recycling one day a month at Walmart's car park. That's tomorrow by the way and it should be extra busy after Christmas and New Year. The weather is supposed to be nice though.

If your husband it happy doing it, tell his parents to piss off. It's none of their business. Apart from cutting down on the amount of stuff that goes into the landfill, it also creates jobs for those people who sort the stuff and send it to the places to be reclaimed. That would seem to be a good thing. CARRY ON.

As soon as they made us pay to use the local recycling drop-off I stopped using it.

We have these huge blue garbage cans that we are supposed to use for recycling but I would have to haul the thing a mile down to where it gets picked up and that is just too inconvenient.

Our family of 4 barely fills a garbage can a week even without recycling.

Hey, just realized I'm a greenie too!

Let's see - I recycle motor oil; I bring to a local shop and he has a pretty high tech waste oil burning system. Very clean burning. never see smoke coming out of stack.

I bring my deposit bottles back.

And at the factory, the cardboard is all recycled.

I was thinking just this morning how my 10 year old pickup can now be considered a hybrid vehicle. It burns gas and oil.:yum::yum:

I wonder if it is now eligible for a tax break. :shifty::doh:
