This is an OLD classified ad, the Snow Trac is no longer for sale. Just thought it was a good write up.

Drives Like a Car: Circa 1970 Snow Trac

This Snow Trac ST4 is believed to have been made around 1970, right around the middle of a 24 year production period that ended in 1981. Designed and built in Sweden, these vehicles were designed as “personal” snowcats, smaller and easier to control than typical commercial duty machines. Roughly the size of a typical, contemporary European family car, steering was by a conventional wheel. This one’s been converted from VW air-cooled boxer to diesel power, also from Volkswagen. Find it here on eBay in Dutton, Lancashire, England with no reserve. Special thanks to BaT reader Kyle K. for this submission.

The ad doesn’t go into the vehicle’s history, but condition looks to be pretty good. Sale includes spare tracks, sprockets, wheels and more filed under “etc.,” so hopefully the next owner will be equipped with whatever’s needed to keep it on the snow for several more years. Note the red interior, which based on other example’s we’ve seen is more likely to have been its original color.

Here’s a look inside. Note the steering wheel, which was central to the way these vehicles were marketed–“as easy to drive as a car!” Typically, tracked vehicles have levers or pedals to operate track speed independently, and though not really too difficult to learn, the steering wheel was nonetheless more familiar to most buyers.

Here’s what looks like an 80’s vintage VW diesel, fitted in place of the original Volkswagen industrial use air-cooled boxer four. Note the large rocker and spring that presumably comprise part of the tracks’ suspension system.

There’s no word on mechanical condition, but the seller says it’s great fun to drive, suggesting that it should be ready to go. With England getting more and more snow these past few winters, it could soon make sense to have one of these in the garage.
