North Pole Webcam

The bottom-left picture of Longyearbyen...been there. :thumb: That picture is about a couple of miles from the main camp/town. I walked it several times to get to Cafe Busen, the only place to get a meal at the time.

Geezzzeeee, here I thought you were talking about the real North Pole about eighty miles west of here....

North Pole is a small community in Interior Alaska, located 15 miles from Fairbanks. Population within the North Pole city limits is just 1,946 while the outlying area comprising Fairbanks and numerous other small towns is approximately 96,000. North Pole was originally formed to attract toy manufacturing companies, but the endeavor did not work out.

Our shortest day of the year brings us just under 4 hours of daylight on December 21st, while the longest day of the year, June 21st, we see almost 22 hours of daylight. Temperatures can dip as low as -78 degrees in the winter, to a high of 95 degrees during our summers.

Alaska is known as "Land of the Midnight Sun" because the sun is up 24 hours per day in parts of Northern Alaska. There is no night sky for many weeks. We love our summers and so do our flowers and gardens - which grow magnificently in our 24 hours of daylight.

North Pole, Alaska is just 55 years old and our city celebrated its 55th anniversary on January 16, 2008!

Ha! Been there, too! Not far from Moose Creek and Eielson AFB. No link to Santas house? Still there?

If you get the chance get the "top gear , Polar challenge" DVD , (it's a UK car show and they had a race between Toyota Pickups and a dog sled team to the North Pole) and see how many places you can identify including some abandoned township with machinery etc still locked in a big shed up past Bathurst Island .

Bit about it here but the DVD is worth finding and watching .

And the DVD itself ,

Hanging out with Dr. Ann Marie Odasz, a biology professor from the University of Tromsø. It was a fine time. :thumb: Oh, I think I was suppose to be doing some work as well, but it escapes me now. Lots of Ruskies up there at the time. Longyearbyen was just a layover point. I was working further north in/at Kongsfjord, Ny-Alesund. Skied the Kongsvegen Glacier with Ann Marie. Ah....memories...

Ann Marie sounds nice! :coolshade

Here Sushi, so you can fantasize what they were doing in the High Arctic...

Maybe it will take your mind off that Amy Whiner for a bit...

I farted once and it blew my bedroom door shut. There, that should put him suitably in awe.

Ok, I made that up. Just figured Sush would think it's funny.

Nope, he would just want to know how much Chili it took to pull that off...
