NO! We have not!
I am so tired of hearing this line. Truth is we have NOT been here before. This time is different. Here's why I say this boldly and believe this time it will work. Caution is warranted but this time the situation is quite different...!
Always, in the past, we treated North Korean leadership with disdain and complete lack of respect. Not that they earned any, but they were always the nation's top dog. So our approach has always been that they were not equal enough to meet us on our level. Strategic patience, foreign aid, Diplomatic overtures and economic pressure, would make a change.
Because we did not want to elevate them to an equal. It is therefore, the motivation of their nuke program, to command respect. But no matter how far along the PRONK got with their program, or how many times they provoked an incident (USN Pueblo), we sent diplomats and diplomatic signals. Made loud squawking gestures and walked away.
When did any sitting USA President promise to meet with a leader of the PRONK? Mano e' Mano as it were. NEVER.
Until now.
Trump's approach from the start was a recognition of Kim's position. Even calling him "rocket man" still elevated Kim Jong Un to a level of respect. By saying "I will meet with him" made the difference.
Why has no one understood,,,; "THIS IS DIFFERENT."
Say what you want about President Trump, but , nice or not, diplomatic or with a club, He is focused on getting things done,
This time, it is different. Giving the leadership of PRONK RESPECT will get them to the bargaining table. And I believe everyone there will get something of what they want. And the peninsula of Korea will stabilize in a political peace.
Kim is 30 and wants to remain in power for his lifetime. we want his people to remain alive for their better lifetimes. And South Koreans want the Northern artillery aimed elsewhere than their capital cities.
Socially, there's a whole 'nuther matter. The two cultures are now quite divided. But first let's get them together without burning either, or both, to the ground.
It will be a great disappointment if these current efforts fail. But frankly we are farther down the road to a solution than we have seen in 60 years.
