imp 1404 automatic trans swap

IMP NEWBIE

Hello everyone how hard it it to switch from the manual trans in my 1968 imp to a automatic trans? Any idea what trans will bolt right in?

the taunus engine is rumored to be the same as a 2.8l v6 ranger. there are threads worth searching on this topic. I dont recall any current ones but they are here.

It is my understanding that the 2.8l V6 has all the same mounting as the V4 so I would assume any automatic that would bolt up to the V6 would work. I would look at early 80's ford ranger pickups. I have a bastardized 1404 in my yard now that someone swapped a 2.8 V6 into. What a mess. I spent a lot of time cleaning up that botch job o_O The end result is pretty good but whoever did the swap did everything wrong.
Anyway from my research a few years back when I was getting that poor cat up to operating spec's yielded some interesting things. The motor mounts are the same as well as the distance from the mount to the back of the motor. The front two cylinders on each side of the V6 have siamese exhaust ports so the manifolds line right up with the existing exhaust system. Bell housing and flywheel/flexplate configs are identical. The only fitment issue is the additional length of the motor in front of the mounts towards the radiator. I should really do a write up of that adventure and post some pics of what had to be done to get it all working. She is a little screamer now!

Sorry for the unwanted info  basically any ford auto that was bolted behind a 2.8 V6 should work

After doing some searching I believe the auto transmission that will work with the V4 IMP is the ford C-3 ??

201spryte Thank you for the info! So what did you have to do up front of the motor did you have to move the radiator forward to clear the fan? any structure need to be cut? Do you have any pics of your progress while on this swap out adventure?? any thing will help. thanks everyone for your input.

c-3's were behind all kinds of ford motors.
Yep, C3 would be the logical fit. Would it just bolt right up? As long as you don't have to do something funky like adaptor plates to match up bell housings and whatnot. Probably requires other fun stuff like fabricating mounts, repositioning the engine, perhaps shortening (or extending) the driveline. I have never done any of that but would love someone to share 'in detail' what a C3 swap entails.

I found this on Wikipedia:
"The Cologne V6 was designed to be compatible in installation with the Ford Taunus V4 engine, having the same transmission bolt pattern, the same engine mounts, and in many versions, a cylinder head featuring "siamesed" exhaust passages, which reduced the three exhaust outlets down to two on each side. The latter feature was great for compatibility, but poor for performance. The 2.4, 2.8 (in U.S.), 2.9, and 4.0 had three exhaust ports, making them preferable.

The engine was available in both carburetted and fuel-injected forms."

It's late to answer this, but since the thread came back up, I wanted to share my two cents.

A TH400 or a TH350 is the bolt-in automatic for that 1968 Impala. But it is not just the transmission you have to swap. You will also need the automatic brake pedal, the correct shifter linkage, and probably a different driveshaft yoke.

Hi handy. The imp in this case is thiokol. Imp.
A thiokol imp is a snowcat powered by a ford engine.

It would be cool to adapt a th350 or 400 to it. But most folks use a ford c3

Hi was wondering if you have rear end parts I have a 1404 but missing the rear differential any help would be great
I know this is a hard part to find
Could you use a different rear end?
