Went hunting for a clock at one of the antique shops in town. Didn't find a clock but I found this cool African painting. It's water color on cloth, not sure what the name of that kind of art is but it's really neat. Looks good hanging on the wall of our new house.

Turns out this type of painting is called "Batik" and finds its roots in Indonesia.

Javanese traditional batik, especially from Yogyakarta and Surakarta, has notable meanings rooted to the Javanese conceptualization of the universe. Traditional colours include indigo, dark brown, and white, which represent the three major Hindu Gods (Brahmā, Vishnu, and Śiva). This is related to the fact that natural dyes are most commonly available in indigo and brown. Certain patterns can only be worn by nobility; traditionally, wider stripes or wavy lines of greater width indicated higher rank. Consequently, during Javanese ceremonies, one could determine the royal lineage of a person by the cloth he or she was wearing.

That is really nice . I love those types of paintings .

My FIL is a art collector and some of the crap he collects and pays stupid prices for is real shit in my book .

Of course I am real shit in my FIL's book so it all evens out . He feels that he is superior to little ole me and I have no taste in the true upper class way of life .Thats true . Things went bad to worst when my net worth doubled his a few years ago . Ask me if I give a rats ass ????

I would love to have a painting like that !!!! Good FIND!!!!!!!!!!!

I like that . Interesting !!!!

Mrs. Two Guns and myself, enjoy going to the antique, consignment shops, and old flea markets. Always walking away with a smile. We love old stuff anyway. Just a few months ago, this one shop that is our favorite for it always have stuff coming in. In this consignment/flea market they have sections or booths they call them. In one booth, along with other very old stuff, there was a piece of cardboad with writing on it. Said, "Old 1897 winchester rifle for sale", and a number below. I knew Winchester came out with a shotgun that year, but didn't know about a rifle. So I called., lady did have a shotgun, not a rifle. A BRAND NEW, UNFIRED '97 pump winchester. You know the rest of the story.
Later on, maybe two months went by. Lady called, and told me she had a lot more guns she wanted to part with. Along with some old knifes. I got every damn one of them. Her father collected guns. She hates guns. I love people like that..... I give her just exactly what she wanted too !!!! Didn't even try to haggle her down in price !!!! The whole time I was loading up the guns, she was thanking me for buying all .... She must of thanked me 15 times.
And I know I have thanked God a zillion times for letting this happen !!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Al. I doubt it has much value but I like it a lot.

squerly,
you know, don't really matter how much value it might actually be worth. It's what it is worth to YOU !!!

It's all in the heart ....

Don't know about anyone else, but I own much that is not worth a nickel to anyone else, but means everything to me.

Very nice painting, looks amazing on that wall, can i have the wall and the painting:wink:

If I remember correctly form art class Batik is a skillform in and of itself. (I did one and it did not come out near that clean) it involves using melted wax and dye dipping for each color. Melting/absorbing wax after the dye dip and re-appyling more wax for the next color. The cracks in the wax produce the lines which are unpredictable.

Squerly, the batik you have, was done by someone with much talent and is gorgeous as is the lady in picture number three!!

FF'ingly Yours,
b
