Do you lend or borrow tools & implements

Dad and I loan/borrow as needed. I've borrowed one of those little 2 cycle augers from my F-I-L a couple of times. He has borrowed a couple of items from me - including my tractor. I was nervous the whole time. He is very careful, but I was still afraid something would happen. I've also borrowed my cousin's tractor when we first bought the property and I need some soy beans gone. I also have borrowed his Toyota Skidsteer a couple of times. I also borrowed his horse trailer when we moved. I've also borrowed his flat bed trailer a few times. Everytime I've borrowed it, I've always rewired and replaced the lights BEFORE I used it from where he loaned it to someone else and they tore them off. I've tried to limit my borrowing in the last few years though and buy it if I need it.

I have loaned my neighbor my power washer. I've also borrowed his car scan tool. He keeps telling me to come get the tiller for the tractor, but I won't as I'm afraid something will happen to it. If I have to pay for his, that will just delay me getting my own even longer.

I loan nothing that has a operators seat in it . I have gone and done some pro bono work . My brother could break a anvil ,so he is off the list . Neighbor never brings it back and I end up going over to his junk pile to try and find my stuff . It is to much of a brother . If I use anything I can asure you it goes back better that when I recieved it . No exceptions . I had a nieghbor who was dying to loan me his generator . I know why now . I went to use it and it did not work . That cost me $650 for trying to start a piece of sh#t . He got a new generator and demanded the old one back too . He is also off my list .

Please tell us more about this one. How did it cost you $650 for trying to start it?

I bought him a brand new one . He said it was fine when he loaned it out . I did not argue the point that I could not start it .

If I know a person is capable of using one of my tools properly (they are few and far between - these people) I will lend them out on my property BUT I no longer lend out my trailers to anyone. I have said I am the only one to tow them, but will offer my services for towing jobs if the persons are REAL friends and not just using me. I hate borrowing tools, but if I haven't the tool for the job, it is quite likely that I couldn't do the job (too big or too heavy etc) so ask the person to do the job for me with their own tool! Hope that all makes sense.

I had to laugh. I end up doing way too much pro bono work myself for this reason. I won't borrow "stuff", so I have bought most everything I need. This includes tools, machines etc. If whatever it is that they want to borrow is inexpensive; I just give it to them and tell them "Merry Christmas, I don't want it back." My issue is that when my (insert tool or machine name) is returned, it is generally broken if it is returned at all. Or, it is so torn up and nasty that I won't use it. Some of my relatives think I'm an ass for being this way, others take advantage of me big time. They either get a free tool, or they get me to do their work for them. :(

I won't loan out my anvil either. :o I bought it from a really old guy for next to nothing several years ago. I later found out that the anvil is worth many times more than I paid for it. It is a near mint condition Peter Wright anvil made in England before the turn of the century. I even drove back to the old guy's house to tell him that he made a mistake and to pay him more for the anvil. He had since passed away. After speaking to his wife, I realized that he made no mistake. He knew exactly what he had and that he was dying. It was basically a very nice gift to practically a total stranger. His widow would not consider taking any additional money for the anvil either. I'm almost afraid to use the anvil myself now knowing what I do about it. But heck, it has been used for over a century and shows character marks but still rings like a bell. Sorry for the long story there, but I definitely won't loan out my anvil. :thumb:

My farmer friend can borrow anything I have except the wife. He is the same way to me. My brothers borrow hand tools from time to time. They always return them immediately. I also have two other friends that can borrown just about anything. The tractor does not get lent out regardless of who wants it. Anyone else, forget it. I spent a lot of hard working money to buy what I have. I don't want to have to replace them because of stupid people that don't respect your property..

I have about 10 neighbors in my rural little neighborhood and 4 of them are constantly asking me to borrow tools (chainsaws, tillers, saws, edgers, etc.), some ask for me to bring my skidsteer over to do grading, move piles of dirt, trash, and clear out brush. Others ask for me to have some of my sub contractors come over and do various jobs pro bono but want me to oversee their work. Quite honestly, I'm tired of it. I always get the gas operated tools back empty, chainsaw chains dull, on and on. I've never said "NO" but I'm getteing to that point.

Those people are not good neighbors. They are users that abuse the rights of their good neighbor. I'd dump them too.

I only lend or borrow tools or equipment to people that I no longer want to see:thumb: Because one's they have it I mostly never see them, and if I do they take off . Kind of funny , that only takes a $10.00 tool to never have to deal with them , my dad said it's worth it, and may be the best $10.00 that I ever spent:tiphat:

I learned a few years ago when I tried to borrow a friends tractor and was informed of the old farmer's saying:

"You can ask to borrow a farmer's wife but you sure can't ask to borrow his tractor".

I will lend tools and equipment to the people that I can trust and depend on to return it. They are the ones that will take care of it and return it promptly in good shape or let me know if it has any problems. The others get the following: its broke, or I have it on loan already or promised to someone else and I will not get it back very soon, sorry!!!! Not many people make my first list to loan equipment to.

I very seldom ever borrow. If I need something once I will probably need it again. I might as well buy it and be ready the next time it is required.

mtntopper says what I say. I am doggone particular who borrows my tools because I have $$$$ invested in them and don't want to have to reinvest when my tools are in good shape to begin with. If it's a piece of junk tool, no problems, borrow away!
