From all appearances, the China Coast Guard was chasing the Philippine Coast Guard in disputed waters. China Coast guard ship thought they would pull a fast one and try to overtake PCG ship, shooting the ship with it's water cannon. China Navy looks like they wanted in on the action at the last second, but forgot to tell the China Coast Guard to stand down. Well, you can watch the video and decide for yourself. I suspect there is some missing or dead CCG personnel.

Who had the right of way, er, who was stand on? I'm being that didn't translate well in China.

A Chinese Coast Guard ship crashed into a Chinese Destroyer.

The CCG ship is the one deploying the water cannon.

Both Chinese vessels were harassing a Philippine Coast Guard vessel.

The waters of the South China Sea are, according to China, "in dispute" simply because China has been building man-made islands in the international waterway, then fortifying them, then claiming their sovereignty extends to that new island. So basically China is pushing their border out to take over international water and push up against the Philippine border. These naval harrassmets have been occurring for at least the past couple of years, which China escalating the confrontations.

If you listen to the Chinese audio you can hear 'Freet Commander' O Lee Fuk, from the deck of the destroyer, shout to the Chinese Coast Guard Vessel captain Wong-Waa, but it was too rate for either ship to be saved.

Meanwhile the PCG vessel certainly is having a celebratory dinner party tonight.
