Cabela's verus Scheels

BigAl

Gone But Not Forgotten
We have both a Cabela's and a Scheels Sporting goods in Reno Nev. and today I stopped at Scheels just to see how it compares to Cabela's .I had never been in one before .

Man o Man !!! There is no comparison . I can't believe I am about to say this but Scheels just kicked Cabela's ass in customer service . I was real dissapointed in Reno Cabela's ,but never in my life have I been treated as professionally as I was in Scheels . They also had about 4 or 5 times as much product as Cabela's . Scheels prices seemed to be a little higher but not by much and again the personal service they gave me more than made up for the difference . I think Cabela's just lost a long time customer .

Bought my first deer rifle from Scheels in 1972 when they were at a small mall here in Bismarck, the size of the store was about 6,000 sq feet.

After that they moved to the larger mall down south, about two years ago they moved into the area that Target used to occupy in the mall. This is fairly large, they have all kinds of mounts, etc. and anything that you might want for the outdoors and then some. They have a coffee shop and restaurant there also.

They carry quite a line of clothing, the most notable being Columbia, rumor has it that they buy the entire line at the end of the year and sell it the next year as new stuff. They must be making money someplace considering the staff and rent they pay.

Went down there a couple of weeks ago to collect the keys for a rental unit that they has leased from me until their new storage unit was done. Counted the assistant managers pictures on the wall and there was twenty two of them. Walking through the store, the staff was friendly, however when looking at the guns in the gun department, no one had time for me. Could have been something to do with all the traffic after the election.:whistling:

Same here , but I bet they had 20 guys working the gun section alone !!Man those guys were great !!!

I've only ever shopped the Scheel's in Lincoln, Ne - and was not overly impressed. Stock looked good, didn't have my size in much of it, gun staff didn't want to be bothered by customers, etc...
OTOH, I've had pretty good service at the Cabela's in Kearney, Ne & KC, Ks.
Similar with Bass Pro - I've been in 4 of them, and the staff have been friendly & helpful for the most part.
I suspect it's a regional kind of thing - the Topeka Home Despot is my last resort, because most of the staff seem to consider customers an inconvenience, but our Lowe's is great. HD in Lawrence is great. Lowe's in Wichita: depends on which one. Lowe's in Independence, Mo? pass - they're as bad or worse than our local HD. HD up by Pottstown, Pa? That's where I first started calling them Despots...
