OK, here we go!

Got the Skidozer off the trailer today. Bought a winch, welded some angle on the trailer and bolted it up. 13,000 lb winch, should work very well.

Got it off down the steep ramps, those will be another project. Cleaned all the debris out of it, I’d already opened up the diff cover and found three chipped pinion teeth, likely going to be replacing the ring and pinion before this is over.

Engine turns over, but the wiring needs a complete overhaul. I’ll pull the carb off and clean it up, get it running tomorrow then pull the cab off for some bodywork.

Got it running this morning after some significant wiring repair. Lots of shorted wires, crappy connections and bad attempts at wiring repair, it will all eventually be replaced.

Points were corroded, after cleaning those up, it started right up with a spare fuel can gravity feeding the carb (which appears to be new) not sure the fuel pump is working yet.

Not much I hate more than unscrewing decades of screwed up electrical work. Lots of head scratching and WTF were they thinking.

On my ST the wiring was so bad, I had to remove almost all (left wiper motor - switch) and start from scratch. The crowning feature was they had used a sheet metal screw through the battery cable to supply 12 V to something.

Got the cab off, cleaned out a few mouse nests along the way. Fuel pump started leaking, so new one on the way along with a carb kit and some other bits. New track belts coming from Boggie

Pulled all the wiring off, ordered new gauges and senders, then did a compression test and quite pleased to see all cylinders are good.

More stuff came in the brown parcel truck, new gauges, pertronix ignition and coil, fuel pump, etc. I ordered a Sierra “engine add-on” marine engine gauge kit because it only includes a tach, oil pressure, temp and voltmeter. No speedo which I do not need. Also got an extra temp gauge for the transmission temp and a matching fuel gauge and new sender. None of the original gauges were working due to various issues including a pretty bad short at some point in the past that torched the instrument 12 vdc supply wire.

Disassembled the brake master cylinders and they are pristine inside, not even staining in the bores , so just need to clean them up and paint with some rustproof paint and reinstall.

New belts from Boggie arrived today, after confirming the engine runs good, I yanked it out this afternoon after work to give it a bath and clean up the tunnel. Going to drain the tranny fluid as it has water in it, remove the oil pan and clean it out, replace a bunch of gaskets seals and the exhaust down pipe since it has a hole. Send the radiator to Tacoma Radiator, they do great work. Grind, sand and paint

I used POR15 on the brake master cylinders, I learned a few projects ago to always apply two coats of POR.

Maybe hard to believe, but I really enjoy restoring old stuff and this skidozer is so very basic and easy - it does need a lot of scraping and pressure washing

After cleaning up the engine and draining the chocolate milk out of the tranny, I removed the valve cover, someone has been into this engine recently, which explains why it has such good compression and oil pressure. I’ll need to pull the torque converter and drain the chocolate milk out of it as well.

This is the first engine I’ve encountered that has the intake manifold cast into the head, very interesting arrangement.

Still cleaning, sanding, welding and painting. Removed the driveshaft brake for cleaning and painting and found the brake lining and drum coated in grease(?) not sure why that would be, any ideas? Maybe just an oil leak, but seems counter-intuitive.

Took the day off and should be a nice, long weekend of cleaning, blasting and painting. Sometime next week I’ll start reassembling, but lots of cleaning blasting and painting remains.

I drained the chocolate milk out of the torque converter, apparently during the years this cat sat, some water got into the transmission. All of the trans cooler fittings were loose. Looking for a new radiator now, most of the engine parts are 1974 Ford Maverick, but the radiator is larger and I’m having difficulty finding a replacement the same size. It’s original because the header tank is stamped FoMoCo, just gotta keep googling.

Got the engine back in today after changing the transmission filter. Lots of new parts, gaskets and hardware. Brake lines installed, engine bed goes in, then engine.

Waiting for the new radiator to show up, in the meantime reassembled the steering brake cylinder mounting and started assembling the tracks, it’s a slow process that involves smashing a couple fingers with a big hammer. So glad I had Boggie punch all those holes, installing the grousers with all the bolts, washers and nuts is going to take long enough!

I welded the left brake lever back together this morning, it was broken at the wire holes at the base of the lever, luckily I got both pieces with the cat. After reassembling the left lever, I lined up the right lever and it did not look right, nor properly fit the shaft. Looks like someone repaired the right lever incorrectly, it must have broken as well.

So, I emailed Boggie because I remembered he has an SV200 lying about and he quickly responded with a photo of the proper arrangement, so I modified the right lever to be aligned properly on the right side of the shaft, then made a spacer between the two. Works very well now.

Then back to assembling tracks...

New aluminum 3 core radiator, perfect fit. Going with a large, 2400 cfm spal fan.

Sealed the diff cover with lots of ultra-black rtv, reinstalled the actuators, drive line bits and new brake lines and started on the wiring. Bought a new fuse box and lots of connectors and wires. Still need to fabricate a fan shroud to optimize cooling, zip-tied to the radiator temporarily. Lots of wiring to organize and clean up after I route everything. Then fuel tanks, etc. and it will run again.

I am truly glad I paid Boggie to punch all the holes in the belts though, my gosh those tracks are a labor-intensive exercise!

Still wiring, cleaning it up and installing solenoids, etc. new seats from Smittybilt. Engine, tranny, radiator and diff are full of fluids, no leaks yet.
