On today’s episode of The Candice Malcolm Show, Candice is joined by constitutional lawyer Keith Wilson to discuss the recent surge of separatist sentiment in Alberta following the federal election results. Wilson outlines the legal process involved, how such a referendum could work, and what might happen next.

Welcome brother Albertans! We want you aboard our ship! Any other Conservative provinces, the welcome mat is out. Liberals need not apply. :tiphat:

I don't want Alberta to try to join the USA.

But I wouldn't mind seeing Alberta separate from Canada and the authority of the Crown.

The province has the energy and natural resources to make it an economic powerhouse and it would be an ally and trading partner to both Canada and the US, but would also see its citizens prosper.

I totally agree it wouldn't be in their best interest to join the us it would be in their best interest to separate from canada.
Same as California New York and Illinois they could leave and I wouldn't be heart broken.

It is not going to happen without the natives all agreeing to separate as well and that would never happen as the government has land agreements with them etc and keep giving them free crap in exchange for land use.

I'm not so sure about the natives, I think Alberta treats them quite a bit better than the Canadian government does, some pretty wealthy reserves that have oil. I can't believe that the reserves put up with the crap from the government, they are sick of living the way they are and I'm sick of paying for everything they get, but this is an entirely different discussion, my point is that the natives are in a position that they want change and the government isn't doing anything, Alberta can make that happen.

Native problems are ancient with no effective solution so far. This problem will remain whether Alberta is part of Canada, USA or Independent. ;)

Alberta will NOT become part of America.

Too many legal hurdles for that (Canadian, International and American).
Too many subjects of the crown (Canadians) who would oppose it.
Too many Americans who would oppose it as a 51st state.
Too many Albertans who would oppose that.

Most likely they will cause all sorts of grief for their fellow Canadians, but they are the energy rich province, so Canada will have to take a beating from Alberta if it wants to retain its welfare state mentality.
