12 VOLT GENERATOR CONVERSION

Mr Bell

Has anyone convert a tractor over to using 12 volt with the original generator. I googled it and some people say to replace your field coils and others do not. Looks like to produce 12 volt all you need is the regulator. I am just concerned over reliability after changing it. I don't want to go alternator.

I have heard both as well. My Ford 9N has been converted. The guy from whom I bought it said he just changed the generator and the regulator.. He said nothing about the coils.

Oh,,,,and the battery. 6Vlt to 12 Vlt
You may have to alter the mounting bracket as the more modern larger generator will likely not fit.

I've seen 2 conversions one the guy put external ballast resistor in series with the original coil, 2nd just put standard 12v coil both had one wire chevy alternator put on to charge

Mr bell that is an interesting approach. Never heard of rewinding the generator. (Dont forget ignition coil)

Most folks think 12v is stronger than 6v but that is not the case. Work is 746watts per hp regardless of voltage.

A 9.6v cordless drill makes the same torque as a 12v or 18v tool ect. ( 6v just uses more current to accomplish same work as a 12v system)

I have restored/reinvigorated two vintage tuckers recently and kept them 6v positive ground. Verified the generator windings were intact, one had a bad regulator, but with clean connections 6v works really well.
