While the Perseid meteors in August snare more media attention, Thursday’s Geminid meteors almost always outperform them, says Geoff Chester, of the U.S. Naval Observatory. Unlike other meteor showers, where the parent is a frozen comet, this one traces lineage to a cosmic rock.

With hope of clear skies and no contentious moon Thursday night, go outside and look up. That’s all. No telescopes, no binoculars, it’s just your eyes. Stay away from front porch lights, backyard beams and street lamps. Find a hot beverage to sip, get your eyes acclimated to the dark and then gaze. The best time will be between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., says Chester.

It is supposed to be clear here tonight but a bit chilly but will give it a shot and thanks for posting this.

Bump.

I was just outside for about 5 minutes. Saw 3 of them. Look to the NNE.

If you don't have city (or Christmas) lights in that direction, you may be able to see from inside the house with the lights off. Getting pretty chilly out there.

Where are you approximately located in relation to Kentucky. I was also out side a few minutes ago but nothing though very clear skys. I can't turn of the city lights however. Oh and I agree it is pretty chilly here too.

I'm in W. PA Joe.

I live deep in a valley (sun hit the house today at 10AM and the sunset on the house was at about 2:30) so my view of the sky is very limited. 2 of the 3 I saw came in a N to S direction and the 3rd was from a NE to SW direction.

So you are only about 8 hours from me driving time. I will go out in a few minutes and see if some of the lights from the park behind me have gone out yet. They do tend to shut down a lot of them about 9 PM.
