Kitchen Reno

Day 2 of electrical today. They were supposed to come Monday but due to a scheduling conflict couldn't. Today, they're working on the ceiling lights. Good thing our cabinets haven't been delivered yet. Which brings me to another point. I told my wife it's a good thing she's dealing with him otherwise we'd be getting a refund for the deposit and going with someone else. He told us two weeks ago that he would be here to begin installing them late in the week or first thing Monday morning. By last Wednesday we hadn't heard from him despite several attempts to reach him. He said he'd be here last Thursday. Still no cabinets a week later. Needless to say I'm losing patience.

Thats why I try to do everything myself. When ever i farm it out to save time, it takes longer than if I did it myself and costs way more.

I finally had enough and contacted the kitchen guy myself last week. He answered right away and told me he would be here today. I called this morning and he said he'd be here by noon. He finally showed up with a couple of visa gift cards as an apology for his lack of response and a firm schedule of when he would be here to begin installing the new cabinets. We're told next Wednesday will be the install date but he'll be here tomorrow to map out the electrical for the under cabinet lighting.

I started work on patching the ceiling where the previous lights were located. There's only 3 holes that needed drywall patches and mud.

The cabinet guy came back the following day as promised and marked out the cabinet location for the upper units so the electrician can run low voltage line for the under cabinet lighting. Everything is scheduled for mid week next week to begin installing.

Meanwhile I have been working on patching holes in the drywall where electrical outlets were relocated and ceiling light fixtures moved. I'm waiting for final mud to dry so I can prime it. I also plan on painting the ceiling and walls before the cabinets are installed. The walls won't take much. The mud on the walls is mostly to repair where paper tore off when I ripped off the old backsplash. Then I will prime the area where the new backsplash will go so the mud will stick and not soak in.

The empty electrical box on the ceiling is the location of the new hanging lights over the island.

You been living your kitchen remodel for a while now, i have one coming up in another year or so, not really looking forward to it. Is the wife getting impatient yet?

The ceiling is painted. My part is officially done in the kitchen until the cabinets and electrical are done and the counter is installed. I only painted what will be visible. The rest will be hidden by cabinets and backsplash never to be seen until the next owner decides to renovate in 40+ years. 🤣 We debated a white ceiling but instead went with the same color as the walls as the upper and lower cabinets are going to be cloud white. Any kind of white ceiling would have made them look yellow. We'll see how it looks when it's done. I can always paint again.

The electrician is coming early tomorrow morning to install the low voltage line for the under cabinet lighting. Our cabinet guy said Wednesday maybe Thursday this week. That's tomorrow.

its always gotta get worse before it gets better

Here's the short version....we now have an installation date for the cabinets of August 2nd.

The long version (I'll leave out the nasty words to keep this g rated) involved several attempts to call unanswered, several messages left unanswered, an email request for an exact date of installation and completion, and finally me sending a text threatening to contact my lawyer if he doesn't respond by Tuesday at 6pm with a definite date.

He finally responded back saying that he was overwhelmed and gave us the date of August 2nd. I'll believe it when I see it. I told him that the next time I see him, he better have either our cabinets or our deposit check. Otherwise I will proceed with legal action against him. Ffs

Honestly, installing cabinets is dirt simple. Just basic skill can get it done. If you know how to make things level and straight you can easily do it. Do the upper cabinets first obviously, lay out where the studs in the wall and ceiling will will be in the cabinet to locate where your screws go is the hardest part. If you have or rent some kind of jack table so you don't have to hold them in place while screwing them in is a big help. Also check out your walls and floors for square and level before you start as you may have to blend things to make them look right when finished. The last new kitchen I did in 2018 the house was built in 1956 and one corner of the kitchen was down 1-1/2". when done you couldn't tell. Same with the bottom cabinets, the most important thing is keeping the gap between the upper cabinets and the lowers parallel, if its not when you do the backsplash, especially if its tile you will see it if its not parallel. A little out of level or square won't be seen as long as its all parallel. The granite or quartz I would have done because its easy to break it, even though I am going to do the granite when I do the Cabin kitchen. it would only take you a few days. Tapered wooden wedge shims sold at home depot or equivalent work well for lining things up.

Let's see how many choice words are said by the end of the day today as we are finally supposed to be getting the bottom cabinets installed. My wife has been in contact with the guy as recently as yesterday and he was still adamant that he was coming today. We'll see. My patience has reached it's breaking point and rather then have a shouting match with she who must be obeyed, I simply said my piece and told her that I was not impressed with this guy's service thus far and she could deal with him otherwise we'd be getting a refund of our deposit and starting back at square one again with a different contractor. So, while she was dealing with him yesterday, I finished mudding and decided to paint the backsplash area for the time being so I am not staring at a half finished wall for the next 6 months. I also have a line on a kitchen base cupboard cabinet with a double sink and counter piece that I will pick up and install temporarily if needed. As I said, my patience has reached a breaking point.

I'm officially as far as I can go until the cabinets get here. I painted the backsplash area yesterday 2 coats as we don't know how long it will take for the counter to be done after the cabinets are all in. We're going with quartz so they have to come and measure everything then cut the slabs. I left the area where the range hood will be as there's no point in painting it if I have to cut into the wall to relocate the air opening.

Just a reminder before the cabinets are installed.

I was going to push your buttons some about the cabinet installation, but I can see you are frustrated enough.

After yet another blow up yesterday where I basically told the cabinet guy that I was tired of his BS and he can either produce our cabinets or give us a refund of our deposit, he finally responded sheepishly saying that he wasn't quite done yet. That's fine. There's this thing called communication skills in which he is very lacking. He finally showed us the progress he has done so we have proof he actually did anything.

He claims they'll be ready for install Saturday morning. He just didn't say which Saturday. We'll see. I'm done stressing about it. I have a sweet BBQ setup that's been working even in the rain to cook pretty much everything we used the stove for. We told him Monday for installation. Otherwise he's going to be waiting a week as we're going to be out of town camping.

FINALLY!

So it begins. The first cabinet is going in. The boxes are pressboard but the drawers are 3/4 finished plywood like I used to make in the mill I worked in for 10 years.

I painted everything that will be visible. I wasn't sure on the range vent location so I left that wall unfinished in case I need to cut into the drywall. Everything above will be covered in cabinets and tile backsplash. The white patch to the left is where the fresh air return used to be. I had to basically swap it around to the other side of the wall. That's all going to be covered in cabinets right to the ceiling anyway and I don't want to waste the paint as I plan on painting the whole right side wall in the dining room once the kitchen is done.

I didn't get a chance to trim the temporary counter last week before we left for a mini getaway. We're home now so today I took a couple pieces of the temporary counter which is just leftover melamine from the cabinet guy down to the table saw in my shop to trim to size.

The counter top will be measured Wednesday to be cut. It's slowwwwwly coming together.

We have more cabinets installed. Still waiting on the doors to arrive so they can be painted and installed. The rest of the upper cabinets need to be installed later this week hopefully then they'll measure and cut the end panels. The counter has been measured and should be ready for installation next week after they cut it.

Yep. About time too. The counter is ready and will be installed in the morning! We're out camping a couple hours away but our boys are home to let them in.
