Young employees

Is it me? Every once in a while an employee needs some redirection. And maybe 10% of those bring up something like "Well, Joe does that even more than me" or something along that line.

My response is always we are not talking about x, we are talking about your performance, my observations, and here's some ideas on how to become an overperformer, hence, bigger raises and more job security.

It seems that EVERY kid under 25 that has an undeveloped work ethic, is constantly trying to get away with whatever they perceive someone else is getting away with.

I had a "kid" today, with 59, yup, fifty nine, attendance occurances in 20 months come begging for his job back. All he could do was talk about how bad everybody else was, not how he's attempted to improve himself.

Then he wants to know if I'll give him a bad reference! Duh!

What are parents and teachers and society teaching these days!!!!!! No wonder the big companies ship work overseas - where people are happy to be priveleged with a job!

Why in the hell did he ever make 20 months with that many misses? We were only allowed 3 a year without Dr. certification. Jobs are rare these days and they still don't get it?

That's an internal problem. Our culture is to give people alot of rope.
People are generally good and but sometimes get into trouble. This kid showed signs at times that he may turn himself round. We tried. We failed. We are trying to figure out how to help these kids. Just way too many of them with the attitude displayed by this kid. We have helped quite a few kids out. They tend to grow up around 23 or so.

But yes, we could start a point system and be punitive on a short rope. Just not our style.

We do have a nice atmosphere at work. Sometimes things get out of hand; we'll take those instances as a trade off to a nice place to wrok.

Everybody wins and no one loses in today's kids. It's the "me" generation where they are never told that they are anything less than perfect. I think the work ethic ended around 15 years ago. I honestly don't see many people younger than me with a really good work ethic.

It's not just the "kids" either. Every time I have a "talk" with one of my employees I get the same thing......"When are you gonna do something about X employee? They do this or they do that." I get this from 40+ year old employees with 10+ years in. I can't control what I don't see or know about. No one wants to take responsibility for anything they themselves do anymore.

I even had one that asked why he didn't get a merit raise. I told him, "Your performance did not warrant one". He replied.......no kidding........ "I had no idea performance had anything to do with a merit raise".

I never let them make it my fault. I won't even discuss the "other" person or even what they allegedly did.

I always bring it back to their own performance. I only get the attitude from older employees about 10% of the time. 100% from the "kids". I'd really like to help them get out of it. Most are good kids, just have their head screwed on crooked. Nobody else is going to help them.

I work with one of those older "kids". He's almost 59 and spends about as much time worrying about somebody else getting away with screwing off as he does doing his job. He will, most likely, become my supervisor before year's end, which is both good and bad. Our supervisor is out on sick leave due to surgery. My temporary supervisor has been bitching about all the headaches of organizing the work and having a ball ordering me around. I damn near wrapped a shovel around his head yesterday, but...............
I think those who have time to watch what others get by with, don't have enough to do. Maybe some extra duty to fill those vacant minutes or hours might be in order. :whistling:

Back where I grew up they would beat you with a stick if you missed work. Alright not that bad but you would be fired after the first couple of times because there are so many people right there ready to take your job in a heart beat. Same thing if you were caught trying to ease by with the minimum amount of work, you're gone and no more discussion. The old "so and so did it" would only get you laughed at.
People need to take pride in their work even if it's a bad job. Nobody wants to employ somebody who is lazy and hates their job.
