I went to the Big E (Eastern States Exposition) yesterday and came home much wealthier. The State of Massachusetts had a booth there manned by people from the State Treasurers office. They had a computer hook up that would search for lost money in your name. I already knew that I had one income tax refund check for about $140 that had never been cashed, but not about the others. Seems that some of my savings accounts have been turned over to the state because of lack of activity. That along with some old stock certificates that I never paid attention to since at the time, they weren't worth the paper that they were printed on. Those apparently did a turn around and when the brokerage house couldn't contact me any longer, turned them into the state. I don't know the exact total, because they didn't know the value of the certificates when redeemed. They told me that the cash amount is substantial from the other accounts. I wonder if they are going to tax me on the money when they send it?????? It is nice that they hold it for you, but you get no interest. The best part is that since I was there in person, that I don't have to jump through a bunch of hoops to collect most of it. Now, I think that I will contact some of the other states that I have lived in to see what might be there. Junk......
