pb,

Of course you an do that, cut those ribs off. But ask yourself why they were there in the first place before you do. PSI on the snow will change dramatically with 36' of width gone. Your machine may perform more like a boat anchor than a snow cat. The 240 hp diesel and hydo's are heavy and only give maybe 40% of HP to the tracks. But they are easy to operate, and perform well in all conditions. They can spot turn, big deal when working...The penalty is the width of tack nessary to carry all the extra weight.

Get your machine weight, and measure the track square incehes on the ground and divide it out. A good number would be 1.5 psi or less....

Hope this helps, Kirk

Hi Travis,
Yes you can cut the grousers but Kirk is right on the money about reduced performance. Resale value goes way down too. What will you do with the blade as that is the widest part of the cat. If you will transport it on a regular basis then cutting makes more sense but if it is only occasionally then I would just get an oversize permit and use pilot cars. Normally guys only cut the outside belt as cutting both outside belts makes the track too unbalanced and tends to contact the frame and body accelerating wear and damage. By the way each grouser is over $100 to replace and tracks are expensive to work on.

We will be moving all the time wide load permit in washington is 20 buck. I was going to cut the outside rib only. Not worried about resale .

Will everyone please quit cutting up perfectly good snowcats. If you need a narrow cat then don't buy a wide one. Anyone who has real snow thinks your out of your mind.

On these particular tracks, cutting the outside belt is done on on a regular basis. I too cringe at cut tracks but in this case it makes almost no noticeable difference in performance. In Alaska you still need a wide load permit at 10' wide but you can purchase a seasonal one if the load is under 10.5' wide. Anything over requires a permit for each move.

Did you ever cut those tracks down?..

would possibly be interested in buying them if you left original size and in decent shape?
