Mufflers for a 1984 Tucker with a 318 engine

The time has come. This spring the exhaust system on a Tucker with the vertical exhaust will be replaced. I plan on following the same route: through the lower triangular cut out on the cowl, straight up paralleling the A pillar on the cab with the outlet just above roof of the cab. It will be all tig welded stainless steel tube and muffler. I would like to put a cylindrical muffler mounted vertical just outside the engine cowl. Right now it is pretty darn loud and I would like to quiet it down as much as possible. The mufflers on it now look like glass packs that were intended for a 1960's mussel car. I don't think they muffle much more than a straight pipe. I have looked on Amazon and have found a couple that would fit. I think most are intended to reduce back pressure rather than reduce the noise. Can anyone recommend a 4" diameter, stainless muffler that will reduce the noise a lot. There is a tread on the Forum from about 10 years ago that talks about routing the exhaust under the cab, under the bed and then out the back. I would rather not go in that direction but it is another idea. Any advice on the subject would be appreciated.

Thanks
John

this is what I did , I know there are others that have done it before me , it is much quieter in the cab

Thanks for the reply. I can kinda see the routing the orange machine. A couple of questions: Did you run two pipes to the back or is there a cross over with one pipe. What did you use for a muffler and where did you mount it?

Thanks for the help.
John

Corvette side-pipe mufflers work very well. You can get them in pairs from Summit Racing...

Those really do look good. As a matter of fact that whole machine looks great. Will I find similar pipes on the Summit site if I search for Corvette side pipes? Are those polished stainless or chrome plated. I was intending to tig weld stainless parts. I noticed only pipes on one side. Is that a straight 6 engine or a V8 with a crossover pipe. Did it make a much difference in cab noise and noise outside the vehicle? Is there a muffler in the system? I wanted to make it quiet. Don't want to wake the neighbors.

Thanks
John

You can do a search on Summit for Corvette Side Pipes and you'll find them in Chrome, Polished 304 Stainless, Sterling Silver Ceramic, or Black. My cat was a straight 6, thus only one side exhaust was necessary. It originally had a small, straight pipe that was loud, restrictive, and not legal on USFS roads/trails since some sort of spark-arresting muffler is required. The Corvette pipe has an integrated muffler that's the length of the heat shield and has a nice deep tone to it.

I converted mine to run out the back. Mine originally ran up and rearward on top of the cab. I had thought that would be noisy but it was very quiet. The only Tuckers I have seen with this were from Canada. Anyway it just wasn't the look that I wanted. You can see in these pictures what it was and now is. I ran flex from the headers to the tubing. The tubing I have now is stainless with baffles that you can insert or not. You can see i painted mine black. Mine still rumbles a bit but you can get an oval muffler that I've read was quiet, to put into the mix. My tube, baffles and hangers were from Stainless Works. They have the oval SS muffler as well. https://stainlessworks.net/?srsltid=AfmBOoqPP-YPbNDVBAKLZQQmDWfTF7xvrtKG-xA1MlDbTKQDAtyWrMEz
