The latest blitz from the NRA states that our constitution can be overridden by an international treaty. Apparently the "US has ratified an agreement...which states that once a nation signs a treaty--not ratifies but simply signs it--then that nation can do nothing to undermine it." The letter goes on to say that a simple agreement signed by an anti-gun president could nullify the second amendment.

Is anyone here aware of any precedent which confirms this scenario? I find it hard to believe that our judicial system would allow our constitution to be overridden so easily.

Oh ye of little faith. Our goverment and our judicial system passes and upholds unconstitutional laws all of the time. Prohibition, the assault weapons ban by Clinton, the recent push by McCain to silence websites before elections, etc. When has the Constitution stopped the US goverment in the past from getting what it wants? It isn't only the NRA that are speaking out on this one. There are many libertarians and other 2nd amendment oriented groups that point out that the UN wants a ban on ownership of civilian firearms WORLDWIDE - so that includes us. I have also seen commentary that says that the US also has agreements with the UN that would allow the deployment of UN troops in the US in cases of "emergency" - whatever that may be taken to mean. While it may seem radical to state that UN troops could get deployed here - please remember that NATO troops were deployed to the US in the wake of 9/11 and Mexican troops were deployed to the US in the wake of Hurricane Katrina - I have seen reports that the Mexican troops were armed (I don't know the validity of these reports). So we accepted the "help" before - which means in the right situation we could be manipulated to accept it again. What would happen if there were insurrection in US cities and all of our troops are over in Iraq? Perfect opportunity to ask for "help" from the UN don't you think? Somehow I don't think a bunch of Pakistani Army troops wearing blue helmets would have quite the same concern for American citizens' rights as US Army or National Guard troops might - then again National Guard troops went around confiscating legally owned firearms from US citizens in the wake of hurricane Katrina so maybe we wouldn't need the Pakistanis' to do it.

That day may come in America if the likes of a Hillary becomes president. Why do you think the Democrats want all guns registered. Why do you think the Democrats want a permanant national record system. That way they can know who owns guns and can confiscate them immediately should they ever pass a law to ban guns in america.
