Canadians kill innocent American civilians

Some people have their shorts in a knot because another Canadian soldier was recently killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan.

While that is certainly unfortunate, let us not overlook the FACTS.

1. Afghanistan is a WAR zone. Soldiers get killed in war zones.

2. The Afghanistan war zone is under the command of NATO... not the United States.

3. The Afghanistan NATO command is led by Canadian Lt Gen Rick Hillier .

So, if anyone wants to blame someone for the accidental death of a Canadian soldier, let it be the Canadian General Hillier who is in charge.

And.... Let us not forget all the innocent, unarmed and unsuspecting American civilians (man, women, and children) slaughtered and maimed by Canadians every year in the United States.

Canadian drivers (drunk and sober) killed more innocent Americans in New Jersey alone last year than all the heavily armed and trained Canadian soldiers killed by friendly fire in war zones in the past five years.

The citizens of New Jersey don't like to see our fellow citizens killed, but we still hang our banners that read "Bienvenue Canadiens" (Welcome Canadians).

We don't have our shorts in a knot. We understand that accidents happen.

I don't disagree that Afghanistan is a war zone or that friendly fire deaths are not part of being in a conflict. Nor did I blame the American military leadership or the American military at all for this happening. It seemed that there are a disproportionate number of Canadian friendly fire deaths. Granted, 80% of them happened in one bombing raid. But how many U.S. friendly fire deaths have occurred? Maybe I just don't hear about them.

There's about 2000 troops Canadian troops deployed in Afghanistan, and for argument's sake we'll say that contingent has been there for 5 years. There has been on average one death per year, or 1/2000 or a .05% casualty rate due to friendly fire. These per capita statistics, carried over to your New Jersey population, would imply that 4,350 New Jersians are killed each year by Canadians. (.0005*8.7M) I guess you do have a right to be outraged!

As best I can find, there's been approx. 20 friendly fire deaths. Approx. 1%

Much lower than previous conflicts. The rate of friendly fire deaths for all U.S. troops in World War II was 12-14 percent; Vietnam, 10-14 percent; Grenada, 13 percent; Panama, 6 percent; Desert Storm 17 percent.

Brian, I assume that's a percentage of the casualties. So, there have been 33 Canadian deaths in Afghanistan since 2002, giving a friendly fire rate of 15%. But, again, that was almost all in one incident. That is the question I had and thanks for clarifying.

Yea, if it wasn't for that one incident a few years back, you would only have 1.

15% puts your losses right around what we got in Desert Storm.

Another thing that killed us (no pun intended) was the number of deaths by non-combat actions during Desert Storm. I think we lost a couple hundred soldiers in vehicle accidents and such over there.
