1973 Bombi SW48 burns lots of oil

Hi,

I have a 1973 Bombi SW48 with a 250 C.I. Ford Industrial motor that burns a lot of oil (about a 1/2 quart an hour).

I only use it about 200 miles a year to plow our private road. The mechanic I bought it from (he used it to plow our road before I bought it - he has since passed away) said oil was cheaper than a rebuild, just keep the levels filled.

Does any body have suggestions as to an additive that will slow the leaking and won't gunk up the motor?

Also are these engines worth rebuilding or am I better off swapping it out?

That statement about its cheaper to buy oil than a rebuild is pure bullshit! If the engine blows then it will cost alot more to rebuild than to do it when it obviousley needs it. Do yourself and that engine a favor and rebuild her asap. The 250 is one of the best egines to have in a snowcat.

Just what I thought and the last thing I want is to fry the motor. I am trying to find a engine manual now to dig deeper and get the parts ordered.

Clifford performance has a huge selection of goodies for the 250! They even sell long blocks if memory serves me correct.

Does anyone know where to get a manual for this motor?

Even though the SW48 is a '73 ( JW73-7704TN) I believe the Ford motor is a '68 ( D8DE 6015 DA). Is there a site where I can run the motor number to verify this?
