I'll jump in and show my age.
I'll side with Sir Knight in that the 60's were by far the best years of GREAT rock and roll.
... the 80's had some good stuff, but not near as much as either the 70's or 60's.
The 60's with the stones, the who, the kinks, the yardbirds, jeff beck, bot dylan, crosby, stills & nash, Neil Young, ccr, the allman brothers, blind faith, the cream, the doors, zepplin and the beatles had us rocking all the time. And there are so many more great bands I can't think of right now. Music in the 60's was a magic time when it all came together.
I think you nailed it. At least for those of us 'of a certain age'.

I'll add Jimi Hendrix. I see Rolling Stone named him greatest guitarist of all time. Yep.

And some personal favorites, the San Francisco bands, because I saw most of them live. For example Big Brother, which was great before Janis Joplin, and even better with her. They, to me, were the essence of that magic time.

One I could never make any sense of was the Greatful Dead. I saw them live at Winterland on New Years Eve, and also from a distance of five ft, at an unannounced 'happening' on the lawn at Sonoma State U playing for an audience of perhaps 100 and just for fun. The did a lot of those. It seemed to me they were so far out there that they fell off the edge.

Jefferson Airplane started out new, innovative, fascinating, magic. I saw them play an upstairs room that must have been a dance company recital hall. The fire marshal cleared it out after a couple of hours since there was only one staircase no wider than that of an apartment house and the audience of 400?? would have all died if a fire started. This was before they had ever issued a record, at the point where they were shopping tapes around to the top-40 radio stations hoping for a break. Fascinating times!

I like to think we were creating the legends that drew all the kids to SF for the 'Summer of Love' 2 years later. If only they had understood there was more to life than the drugs that doomed their experiment.

Wow Chris, you saw all that. Awesome. I'm jealous. Loved all the extras you named, especially Jimi.
Good additions Loralei. I had forgot about Buffalo Springfield. :applause: :applause:
And Joe Cocker, I still love his version of "You can leave your hat on". They used that song in 9 1/2 weeks. It fit the movie well. I saw him live in the 80's and he was still rocking the house. :thumb:
Leon Russell was another oldie but goodie. I saw him about 10 years ago though, and he seemed rather burnt out. Wasn't the Leon who played with Mad Dogs and Englishmen along with Joe Cocker.
Just listened to one of my Hendrix CD's last weekend. Hey Joe, Little Wing, The wind cries Mary and it even had his version of the Star Spangled Banner from Woodstock. Simply Awesome!!!!!!!

Time for some more Aussie music , I loved the cockroaches , saw them live and they were the most fun band I've ever seen . Little wonder they evolved into what they are today . Jeff on keyboard is the "purple wiggle" and Anthony on guitar in the blue shirt is the "blue wiggle" . Lead singer is Paul , Anthony's brother who is the wiggles manager , they swap around in various clips though so either one is singing or playing .... Not much of a decision really , play in pubs to drunks or play to kids with parents who'll buy videos , dvd's , merchandise etc ...

Love the daggy fashion in the clip ,
